what's the trick to install the brake calipers?
those darn shims won't both slide in.
Worked on it for over an hour then gave up. I got the pads, caliper bracket, caliper on the car. Slide the upper shim in there no prob. Lower shim won't slide in, even after using a screwdriver to push the caliper up thereby giving more of a gap to try and put the lower shim in there.

That's kinda weird. I've never had the problem you've described. A screwdriver has always worked for me. I tried some antiseize on mine recently. The sliders went right in. I don't know if antiseize is the best stuff, or if they should be installed dry, but the truck's brakes seem ok.

Anti-size is great for the slide pins too, tho I usually try to stick to something like wd-40 on anything even close to the pads.
A little bit goes a long way. Get a smudge of it on your hands and don't notice it and you'll be wiping it off your car's interior for three weeks :) For that reason you want to make sure you don't get a big glop of it on your pads. You aren't going to stop very good for a while otherwise.
On a side note is always fun to wipe a little anti-sieze onto the seat of your buddy's pants and watch him go crazy trying to figure out how its completely coated everything he owns :)

mabye the springs in the caliper bracket are too stiff? not letting caliper push all the way up?
mabye i should just put some Wilwood calipers and rotors on there and call it done.

tried it again yesterday
those shims won't go in. looks like they're 1mm too thick. I cranked that caliper witha screwdriver, got it to move up and inward. Increasing gap for shim to go into. but can't get it in.
the caliper is reman, installed 1 year ago.
Does anyone have a spare set of shims I can buy?
I think I'll get out the dremel and thin that shim down. I drove the truck with only lower shim on right front brake. Steered straight. Pulled to left during braking. eye-opener getting off the freeway. Thank god I have experience with overcooked brakes on the racetrack . . . . :)
