Forum Almost Back up....

F-ing DDOS attack... The server is almost back up... no data was lost, but a new OS was installed with updated software all over the place, and since this board software is so old (written in php3 vs php5 on the server now) I'm going through hell getting everythign updated.

Be patient while everything comes back up. If you still see errors next week, shoot me an email and I'll try to fix it.

We're Ba-aaack!

...now, what exactly is a 'DDOS' attack... and how can the rest of us better protect ourselves?

DDOS = Distributed Denial Of Service.

What happens is a bunch of virus/worm infected PC's are controlled by a cracker to flood one site on the web with traffic. In my case, it was UDP packets that have higher priority than anything else... so the normal website functions couldn't happen, because the server was too busy dealing with the stupid zombies requests.

It caused me to burn 100 GB of data over the course of the 1 day attack. I think I have a 500 GB plan, but it will be a long and costly month if I go over...

The ISP wasn't sure if the box was comprimised either, so they reimaged it with a new operating system (Fedora Linux vs Redhat 9 Linux) so a bunch of things broke because the coding on this site was so old.

Best way to protect yourself?
1. Get a Firewall if you are on broadband
2. Run Linux, BSD or get a Macintosh
3. if you must run windows, buy a f*ing virus scanner, and keep that sh*t up to date!!
4. download or buy an anti-spyware program!!
