5 speed swap question

When swapping a 1981-1985 Rx7 5 speed into a repu will there need to be any modifications to the drive shaft?

My shaft seems to short in the front section in front. I am working blind as far as the engine location compared to stock.

Driveshaft should be just fine. Overall length of 81-85 tranny is same as REPU.

I can say that the 79-80 bolts up better, it does need a small plate to attach tranny mount to tranny crossmember. about 4" x 4" with four holes in it.

great......

I guess I need to do some more measuring and fitting. I am pretty sure I have the engine the correct spot - but the drive shaft is to short.

I will keep messing with it.

If someone could grab some measurements for me that would be great.

Front of the frame to the front of the engine.

I need the length of the stock yoke on the front of the driveshaft. Say.. centerline of the u-joint to the front of the snout.

Length of the drive shaft from the pivot point in the middle to the front of the shaft.

If anyone has access to a drive shaft to measure it would help allot.

Don't have the measurements for you Billy, but the 1979 & 1980 SA gearboxes are the only ones that will bolt up without major modifications other than the trans crossmember mentioned already (ask Charles- he makes them). The 1981-1985 transmissions have the shifter set further back, and will require modifying your floorboard, whereas the '79-80 trans will pop up right where the stock REPU shifter would be, to my knowledge. I know Charles did this (1979-1980 5-speed) to his truck (the red one), and I plan on doing it to my '75 when I get that far into the project.

A couple'a measurements for you:

1.) Center of front U-joint bearings to tip of 'snout': 6.5"

2.) Center of middle (carrier) bearing mounting bracket (measured to very middle of the ovall-y, adjustable-mount bolt holes...) to center of front U-joint bearings:
27.5"

--Mind you, these are 'rough' tape measurements...--

...hope that helps... :)

Thanks.

Between Charles and your numbers I know it is the front snout that is wrong. PO must have swapped it for a pinto unit.

I will swap out the snout, machine my driveshaft to diff mount and I will be ready for the 4 link install.
