4WD REPU

It has been done.

I bumped into an older guy at the local Pep Boys parking lot. After parking the REPU and walking towards the front door.

He says, does that have a rotary engine?

Yes, 13b.

I used to own two of them. Turned one into 4WD using Jeep parts for the front end. The Mazda parts were made much better; lasted a long time. I replaced the Jeep parts a few times.

Too cool.

:)

I owned one

Hey Brad,

Do you know when the fella did the conversion? I owned a similar truck that I bought in 1986 when I lived in Arizona. It had a jeep axle and transfer case and supposedly had come from Tucson. It handled terribly, but was pretty kewl. I sold it in 1996 to a guy from Black Canyon City who was up in years. He also bought my wonderful '77 Cosmo. Anyway, yes it's been done, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've always wondered if early 80's Toyota 4WD components would make a better swap.?

Any details on the drivetrain used for the 4wd conversion? 4wd is one of many considerations/paths when I start my frame off restoration on the 75 I bought this summer.

You will need a dana 30 or 44 frontend from a 76-82 Jeep CJ widetrac, steering arms, drag links, brakes, leaf springs, front and rear drivelines, crossmember, spring under the rear axle, and shifter for the transfercase. The biggest problem is mating the transfercase to your transmission. Or you can just get a divorced transfercase and install a short driveline between the transmission and transfercase.

Wow, that is a better and more detailed reply than I ever expected. Sounds like the voice of experience. Thanks so much for the parts list.

Mine used a short driveshaft to run the transfer case.... That part worked fine.

I haven't really looked too much into it but I thought that fords bronco 2 tranny was made by mazda does this one have a seperate Transfercase Mazda is so anal about not retooling it would not shock me if we could bolt on a early or turbo bell housing to this. many of the b-series trannys seemed to look like you could do this to them as well.
