Yeah, I wish it were possible to go this year. Oh well.
I know my REPU will certainly miss not being in the group photo...Sniff...Sniff...

Anybody else out there in a panic to get their REPU in safe driving condition to drive to Irvine? I swear, in the last 2 weeks I have had more problems than in the whole year since I get it on the road again. Hopefully the brake caliper rebuild finishes everything off and I will be ready for the drive. I don't want to have to resort to putting miles on my FD :)

i'M GONNA REALLY MISS YOU KLAUS, NOT GOING AND ALL. ESPECIALLY W/ ALL THE VALUABLE INPUT YOU'VE GIVEN ON OUR NEW REPU.
tom, ya gotta go, as it stands looks like you'll see our 77 mazdagreen repu @ sevnstock, and as far as 1pm @ old school session...sounds great. 2pm would be more ideal for me, but that's just me.
love to see and network w/ you all. come on guys, bring the repu's, let's celebrate n represent. for thos that are on the borderline, deciding.....just go.

I really want to take the REPU! I have put so many hours into it to make it a road-worthy vehicle again but things keep going wrong. I re-built the calipers now the brakes make a constant metallic rubbing sound even when not braking and I also just discovered my idler arm bushing is totally disintegrated. I know what I am going to be using my office phone for tomorrow and it aint going to be work related :) Then to tear down my brakes again and see why they are so noisy. Any ideas what to look for? Pads are new, rotors look new, how do I make sure everything is properly lined up in there?

tom, ....suggestion, our socal7 club was at Laguna seca this past weekend and chatted w/ cameron worth, driving the 3rd gen for pettit racing n chris from checkpoint engineering in sacramento, ca. great rotary tuner. He probably has the best overall package on his repu, that he built himself. A dark kindof metallic navyblue color, turbo II setup, 3 front swaybars, 3rd gen diff. w/ lmtd slp, sweetest rims seen on a repu, 280hp @ wheels, smog legal, 30 mpg hwy, 22 city. He is a rotor tuner.
in anycase, i say all this to refer him, he knows his stuff w/ all rotaries, and specifically repu's...everything from conversions to susp. setups to tuning. had a great talk w/ him. Call him, he may be able to troubleshoot over the phone w/ you. I highly recommend calling him and batting some ideas off of him. can you tell I really want all you guys to go, with no excuses to hold you back?
seriously, though...call chris @ checkpoint engineering for your brake n idler arm questions...he's got parts and nice performance upgrades for our repu's. (916)852-0306

quote: I re-built the calipers now the brakes make a constant metallic rubbing sound even when not braking
if you rebuilt your own calipers then this wouldn't apply, but ordered rebuilt calipers that seemed identical to me. only when i bolted them up, my original bolts were too long and pressed against the insides of the disc. To the point of not letting the wheel spin at all! When they were a little looser they made a lovely metallic rubbing sound whenever the wheel was spun. i had to get additional washers to space the bolts back some.
and yes they were in the right holes, cause thats what i thought at first too.

Before Thursday
Before Thursday my truck has to be painted, have a new bed-liner sprayed in, have new tires and wheels, have the gas tank fixed (or good enough), have all the trim, running lights, chrome, grills etc put back on. But I'll make it if I have to stay up till 4am each night.
Phew... what a trip.

I got it all figured out now, I am going to pull apart the idler arm assembly and take it around tomorrow and find a bushing that fits "close enough" and modify it to my needs. I figure I can drill it out, sand down the outside, and whatever else I need and come up with something that will be alot better than nothing. I can get the correct bushings after I get back and replace all of them at that time. That will leave me with one day to fix my rubbing brakes problem and I am set to go. Cant wait to see another REPU or 2 this weekend!

Damn Damn Damn!!!
Damn! Damn! The truck won't be done in time, there was a lot more work to be done on the front end than my body guy saw yesterday...
However, next year, or even next big event, it will be ready... and pulling the FD on a trailer!
I'll be printing out the digital photos and bringint them with me to SS5 for you all to see...
This is really for the better, since we hadn't completely solved the fuel problem, not the electrics, nor the center console/gear shift cover, etc...
Damn!
Next time any of you are in Vegas, email me, and I'll give you a tour of the strip in the REPU... once it is done!

Hey Rotarynews. I might have to take you up on the offer. I got a couple of uncle in Vegas. I like going when it's cold cause it beats the hell out of going in the heat. Some pictures of the progress would be nice. Hope to see everyone there and share some ideas.

idler arm bushings
Tom.....Idler arm bushings are available from CarQuest, and probably NAPA also. Better bushings than the stock OEMs. Probably take an hour at most to rebush the idler arm. Quicker than making your own!

Good Call! I just picked up the bushings from CarQuest this afternoon. Assuming they are the right ones I should be able to pull my brakes apart to get them right and replace the bushings so that I am road-worthy by tonight. It will be quite a struggle to keep focused on the truck since the Racing Beat muffler for my FD just came in today, but I think I will be able to handle the stress.

Well I got the bushings in and the brakes fixed. Will try and drive the hell out of it tomorrow to make sure nothing bad will happen during the trip and if all goes well I should be ready to bring the REPU to 7stock. Woo hoo!!! I was able to get everything done in time! See you guys there.

Tom.what was the brake problem?
Glad I could help! Good luck, and have fun at SS5! Wish I could make it! I trust the REPU to make it, but just can't afford the time or money right now. Now if I could convince the Guru to buy, I'll fly! ;-)

The brake problem was several things. The calipers werent aligned properly, I assembled them originally off the rotor but I guess I didn't do a good enough job. Last night I pulled them apart and reassembled everything on the rotor. The other thing I did was not properly lube the seals with brake fluid. While I had the calipers pulled I moved the pistons in and out a couple times to get them lubed up. Brakes feel great and I have more stopping power than ever before!

Everyone who is going this weekend have fun!
Live it up!
You will be totally accepted by everyone around you.
I guess after all the arguements I have endured with friends who drive piston cars, and the number of rotarheads that make up the actual population of my Metro area. It would be nice to be surrounded by 5000+ people who also agree that the Mazda Rotary Expieriment is an absolute success!

I really appreciate your enthusiasm and sentiment, Tomas... wish I could be there, too... so nice to be a part of a group of like-minded rotorheads. Well, maybe next year! "Party On!"
