(Stock) Engine Wiring Question

OK, guys- need a little help. I'll try to make this as simple and direct as I can, so bear with me.

I have a question about the differences/similarities between '74 through '76 engine wiring. My green '74's (manual trans) old engine had a harness that was made up of several small connectors for the smog equipment (TPS, ACV, etc.), water sender, alternator, emissions solenoids, etc. My '76 (also manual trans)has the same setup, although the body/cab harness is obviously different and has the "extra" fuse panel up near the brake master (but the two engine harnesses appear to be identical).

My '75 (also manual trans) has a slightly different engine setup (the body/cab wiring is identical/similar to the '76). The alternator, water sender and emissions solenoids are on their own connectors (like the '74 & '76), but the smog stuff (TPS, ACV, etc.) all connects into another pigtail harness that terminates into a six-pin connector (though not all pins are used), which then ties into the main engine harness that connects to the truck body harness.

OK- now that I may have confused you- my question is are the two engine harness configurations interchangeable? All of the wiring coloring and gauges (sizing) on the body side of the harness where the engine harness connects in appear to identical on all three of the trucks in question- '74, '75 & '76, so I'm assuming that Mazda just had the two variants of the engine harness for some reason. I ask in case anyone knows off-hand, so I don't have to follow each and every wire all the way through the truck to see where they all terminate (all of my diagrams are stashed away).

This isn't just curiosity- I need to know- swapping engines at the moment.

Thanks,
Neal.

Hope this helps....

....Neal, I have a parts manual for 74' and 75'. It shows that all of the varios harnesses have a different part# from 74' to 75'. Hope that helps.

Not really...

...but thanks, Max. Since they have different connectors and all, I figured the part numbers would be different.

I also made a goof on my initial post. The additional pigtail harness has a nine pin connector, not six. Maybe someone else has the same setup? And on a '74?

Offhand...

...I don't think I have enough truly stock stuff under any hood remaining to be helpful, 'for sure', in that regard... However, I would speculate/assume that any variant would be as functional as you cared to make it, and the condition of the wiring allows -- to the extent that you want to recreate *everything* that plugs into a given harness as fully dealer stock original as you possibly could...?

I'd say, if you want an *absolutely* correct, stock '74... you've gotta go with the harness that belongs in that truck, based on manufacture date. Didn't Mazda experiment with different ignition configurations, etc. by '75 ? When did they use the three points dizzy -- and did they ever, in the REPU's ?

If, on the other hand, you're just looking to make it functional for practical purposes -- just do it!
