Post your year and VIN

I was curious how many REPUs there are out there, and how rare certain years are (77, specifically). If we had a list of VIN numbers and model years, we could put together a pretty damn good list of numbers. We're sure to have a really late 74 or really early 75 (change from PA to SPA), etc. and can learn quite a bit. I'm checking eBay for those auctions that actually post a VIN, but this should be quicker.

So, whatcha got?

If you check around...

...there's a thread here on the Forum somewhere that lists the production numbers, by year... I think it's entitled 'Production Numbers'.

All of mine are 1974's, and one is an 'early''74 -- complete with single stiffener tailgate, as is my 'spare' bed.

VIN #'s are on a 'need to know' basis... not for mass consumption on the internet, sorry!

Yep. I looked earlier and saw that folks had quoted "about 15k, most 74s or restamped 75s". I found the thread you're talking about, and all my questions are answered. Thanks.

There is about 15.000 repu's, most of them 1974. In 1975 it became Repu S, and until 1976 saled only 700 pieces. In 1977 was upgrade mostly in electrical system, it became 4-door and with 5-speed manual gear box, byt it saled only 3.000 trucks.

That means that there are almost 11.300 REPU's 1974 model.

I know that from my Mazda research in Greece.

Exactly as I read it...

It is estimated that just over 15,000 total units were built. Most were made for the 1974 model year, due to the energy crisis putting a damper on sales, Mazda restamped many of the 1974 models with a prefix "S" designating it as a "1975" model. Approximately 700 units were built for the 1976 model year. Mazda invested in a moderate redesign for the 1977 model, updating electrical systems, adding an additional 4 in cab stretch for more comfort, and adding a 5-speed manual transmission with different differential gearing. However, after about 3,000 units, the REPU was discontinued due to poor sales.

"4 in."...

...means 4 *inches*. The '77 had an approx. 4" longer cab.

"Re-Badged '74s"

Just an observation I'm not sure has ever been brought up before- where did this notion of '75s being 'excess' '74s, just rebadged come from? I have a '75 out back here, and owned another one a few years ago. Also have my current '74, as well as the '74 I used to own that I got from Klaus. My point is that my '75s as well as every '75 I have seen whether in person or in pictures differs alot greatly from '74s. The '75s have the different instrument cluster, the warning light on the cluster bezel, a different body wiring harness, different engine harness and an oil level sensor (that the '74s lack). I also have a November 1975 issue here of PV4 magazine with a road test of the new '75 Rotary Pickup, which they mention the '75s are here "better late than never", so long after the '74 trucks were introduced.

Now if the majority or all of the '75 models were just re-badged 'excess' 1974 models, why did they take so long to be brought to market? And why are there so many differences between the two models? I have to say, I really don't see where the rumor came from about excess '74s and whatnot...

74 & 75

To answer your question Neal I may be part of the reason for the debate on 74s and 75s, when looking at some of the Parts book information you will find that the 74 parts(if you have one printed in early 75) book lists vin numbers for 74 REPUs that stretch well into what we commonly call 75s also it has been noted by more than a few on this forum and others that they have 75 vin numbers on 74 registered trucks myself included in that bunch my 75 or 74 truck does not have the extra S on the vin number also some of the early 75s I saw had the extra S stamped on in a different font size like it was an afterthought this was also very common on Mazdas other rotary makes for 74 and 75 I have even seen a 75 Rx3 with 2 vin data plates one right on top of the other Mazda in the history books also makes no secret of the fact that production was slowed because thousands of cars 74s were sitting at the factory and US ports this is the same info that i previously posted on the production numbers area

Yeah...

Trust me, Dave, I didn't forget all of our phone conversations about the issue. I am really curious, though about the whole 74/75 thing. I contacted Tulsa Turbo about sharing his code and info for his RX-3 Registry so I can start one for REPUs (along with other ones for RX-5s, etc.). I don't mind putting my VIN up, and I'm hoping others will too so we can get an idea of just how many REPUs are still around, even if they are just parts trucks that will never be on the road again.

Sounds as rare/crazy/custom as the quad-cab REPU, or the REPU tow truck(s)... (?!?)

Yep with the side window.. Saw it myself in their parking lot. YEARS ago. Haven't checked lately but that REPU was sitting behind the shop, and used parts were very pricey.

OK, but...

...do you think it was custom built (obvious guess), or are you saying Mazda put out a limited number of those trucks?

Not as a limited edition...

It just stop selling this truck because of low numbers.

Only 3.000pcs, in both US and Canada.

Wait a second...

Jimmys6, you're saying Mazda produced 3,000 units of this extended cab with small rear side window that Brad said Mazdatrix used to have an example of? Like most of us on this forum, I've been into Mazda rotary cars and the REPUs since I was 15 (17 years ago), and in all that time, I have never heard of, seen pics of, etc. of this extended cab truck- where are all of them if Mazda made so many?
