Some updates

Well, got a few items crossed off my to do list over the last week or so. Finally got the RX7 5 speed swapped in and it's working great! Thanks to all that gave advise on the subject. BTW, I think I will keep the RX7 shifter and modify the seat a little when I go and reupholster it. I just barely hits the seat as is, but I love the position of it!

I also repainted the stock wheels.

Stock rotor centercaps are at a friends being polished.

I also installed my brand new factory dash pad that came with the truck when I bought it. What a difference it makes compared to the cracked up original one.

I also scored NOS wing window rubbers off eBay and will be installing them as soon as I can find the inner and outer wipers. I have some factory glass run that came with the truck. Anyone here the seller?

I'm fixin' to do the same tranny swap, just waiting to borrow the neighbors trans jack.
Any pitfalls I need to look for?

Yeah...
I swapped out a used 1st gen rx-7 tranny. Reused existing clutch, flywheel, and throughout bearing. Transmission was a little noisy but felt ok. The tranny eventually crapped out on a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd at 6.5 K. After I pulled it found the bearing disintagrated for the lower shaft on front in bell housing. Might want to check bearing before install. Lesson learned. Good news.... now I have T-2 tranny getting ready to be put in.

This ol' 4 speed actually feels great, but the first three gears are LOUD.
Looks like I have to drop the exhaust to get the trans out, a pain due to lots of rusty hardware. Parking brake cable is in the way, too. In a way, it looks a bit tougher than the swap I did last year on my 88 RX-7 vert.
Or..I'm older and lazier..:)

Very straight foward swap. You do not need to drop the exhaust (stock at least) or mess with the e brake cable. Drop the driveshaft, disconnect the reverse switch and speedo cable, remove the shifter, starter, slave cylinder, drain the oil, remove the bellhousing and trans mount bolts and pull it out. I did it without a jack and had no issues. You do need to pull it straight back to disengage the input shaft then tip it foward to go under the clutch assembly to get it out. You will need to fab up a plate for the new trans mount due to it being 1 1/2" further back than stock. I thought someone put up a drawing with dimensions recently. The only other thing was the REPU shifer bottomed out in the RX7 shifter housing but I ended up just using the RX7 shifter (I disconnected it from the 3 bolts holding the circular plate down) time from start to finish was about 2 hours.

Lookin' good, indeed!

Recommend Amsoil synthetic gear lube for all manual transmissions. Good preventive maintenance, and has actually improved function over time in some instances(!)

If you rubberband some baggies over the tail of the trans., you can pull it without draining. Just be careful...

Replacing the input shaft bearing and seal whenever swapping is good preventive maint./insurance as well.

Transmission jack? Still never had one of those... sounds like a nice thing to have, though! Always just got under there and wrassled it into place...

Did you have to cut the trans hole bigger?
