Oil change

I have something wrong.....I went change my oil and when I pulled the drain plug the oil was under pressure!! I MEAN OIL BLEW OUT OF THERE !! What a freakin mess. thought y'all might enjoy a godd laugh on that. There is a vacuum plug on the base of the oil filler tube I suspect that is the culprit. Thoughts?

Sounds like a clue...

...to your recent issues. I'm surprised that you'd crack the drain plug before loosening the filler cap, though...

Absolutely, needed crankcase ventilation is (obviously) not happening.

What's hooked up, what's not, and what's plugged/non-functional... and/or what's hooked up in the wrong location?

It thought i had loosened the filler cap Ha. Any way there was a vacuum plug on the filler neck as well as on the housing at the base of the filler neck. I routed the one on the housing to the air cleaner and the one on the filler neck to the vent tube on the top of the holley carb. sound right?

I've never owned the Holley...

...so I'm not sure.

I've also never had a 100% bone stock, bona-fide REPU setup underhood, so once again, I'd have to refer to the manual, etc.

Possibly helpful solutions:

1.) Post detailed pic's here inviting comment.

2.) Contact Racing Beat for their recommendations, if you're running the RB Holley/intake/exhaust/block-off plates.

Merely having the breather line blocked off at the base of the filler neck and not loosening the filler cap should not permit the system to pressurize. It sounds to me there is another more severe problem, such as a leaking seal (oil control ring) permitting combustion pressure to enter into the sump, but what is keeping it there and pressurized is the real question. Upon shutting the engine down, in theory, I would think some of the pressure would "escape" back into the engine itself (essentially the way it got in in the first place), though I realize it wouldn't necessarily all escape out. The breather tube would help to relieve the pressure, but the sump should never come under that kind of pressure in the first place, so you need to research the true root of the problem, provided it wasn't just a rare fluke that never happens again.

Easy short term solution: got to an auto parts store, and buy one of the really small breather filters that essentially looks like a mini-cone styel filter and hook it up to the base of the filler neck where it is blocked off right now on your truck.

Neal.

I could see the sump quite pressurized. Combustion is a high pressure event and every single event will push just a little more gasses in there. Eventually after a long drive the pressure could get quite high. Some of the pressure may bleed back past the oil control rings after shutting down, but even if a low 5psi remained it could still spray a lot of oil when you loosen the drain plug.

I installed an inline pcv valve between the vent on the housing to the base of the carb and connected the vent on the oil filler tube to the air cleaner. This raised the idle a little.
