Any estimates of the number of drivable REPU's left?

Hey guys,

I had a friend ask me the other day how many good drivable REPU's are left in the world. I said to him that it can't be many as they were only sold here in the US,and not many anyway. I know a few have made there way to other parts of the world, but still that number can't be huge. We all know there are a few collectors in our community like Klaus that have many trucks, but judging by talks with him,not many are drivable. There can't be many on the east coast either as I only know of maybe five in New England, and one of those is a rolling truck with no engine/transmission.

I know not everyone who has one comes to our board, and heck many people that own them may not even realize they have something so cool. Any numbers you guys come up with are pure guesses, but anyway do you guys have any idea how many usable ones are left on the planet?

Chris

I'd guess

1,500 left. How many drivable? 500?

Wow!!! So in your opinion these things are rare vehicles, and even more rare in running, driving condition. I guess I should hold on to mine a little longer, maybe it will appreciate in value.

I'd say 500 is a fair amount.

Could be a lot fewer are actually driveable(?)

Of my five, the two that still have rotaries underhood are the ones that run. Two more have dead pist-on conversions (not my doing), and the one I've been parting could have been put back on the road with a frsh engine, etc. ... except practically no one wants to deal with repairing floorboard rust-through in the cab. :(

Might just be a few hundred left potentially roadworthy, with fewer still actually registered and driven (?)

That's what I'm doing! Speed limit signs make great sheet metal for floorboards.

I figured more then half have already been crushed and turned into Toyota's, which leaves about 4000 +/-???

Half of those are beyond repair and buried under thorn bushes behind a barn turning into piles of rust

leaving 2000... most of those are a ton of restoration work and/or have been stripped for parts

maybe a 1000 are left in some state of running or close to running

so yeah, somewhere in the neighborhood of 500-600 are probably still licensed/registered trucks

I have one i drive all the time... another i am going to redo the brakes (hopefully this weekend)... and 2 more that should be up and drivable over the next year.

sadly, I have 2 others that look like they will be stripped for parts... unless someone wants to make me an offer on them, unfortunallty they look like they will be worth more as parts then as a whole... but i would sell them at a loss to someone who was willing to restore them

Of the trucks that we have

1974s 3 of 6 running (1 i would drive anywhere 2 only locally they are smokers)

1975s 0 of 2 running

1976s 1 of 1 running ( and it ran away from the cops a few years back to the tune of a 4 hour chase, not me)

1977s 2 of 3 running but the cabs are rusted so bad on the door post that I don't really want to damage them more.

others that I know running registered in San Antonio 3 74s in Austin 2 74s none of these are members of this forum

So my total is 6 (of 12) + 5 that I know aren't members for 11

I drive my 74 daily to work, as does my brother with his 77. And we've been a Mazda dealer for 34 years.

There are 636 members on this forum, some members do not have a truck and some have more than one. People who have a truck who are not on this forum may or may not be able to drive it because at the age of these trucks, to keep them running your going to need help, so I guess not many of the non member trucks are running.

So average of 1 truck per member. Given we all need a parts truck once in our lives, say half the members trucks are running, so 318 is my guess. If that is true, then I need to add about $1000 to the value of my very rare truck.

So have a happy day!

My 75 is running but the street port that is in it does need a rebuild. I don't have very much rust on my truck but i'm going to restore this beast before it rots away.

Since this is all being done on a hypothetical basis, I guess I'll be the voice of dissent in this thread and say somewhere around 1200.
I base this solely on what my two eyes have seen after surfing the net for the last 15 years.
Actually, I think they turn up quite regularly for sale. That is to say, if a person had the cash and really wanted one, I dont think it would take them too much time to find themselves one to buy.
In the last couple of months there have been 3 nice (driveable, with little rust) examples surface on ebay alone.
As for the value, I really wish rarity translated to dollars as I am a Repu owner myself, but I dont think the market is quite there yet. That really nice all original white one described as 'barn fresh' went for around $4k on ebay. The butterscotch one $3800 and the nice red one on the east coast for about the same.
Right now on the mazdarepu board 'joaniesan' has what looks to be a straight, running, registered, truck and seems to be struggling to get her 3k asking price.
Having said all that, I think 1200 is still a very low number and would put you in very rare company by owning one. Also, I think most Repu owners have the truck for their own pleasure and not just for investment purposes so the value isn't entirely relevant anyways.
Oh well. I'm sure I am going to catch hades for this post but it is just my opinion. 1200 and I am unanimous in that :D

1200 doesn't bother me much. However, arguing the questionable value should be left to the insurance companies. Rarity cannot be separated from value.

I think everyone agrees the REPUS are an appreciating asset, and would appreciate more if someone like Jay Leno owned one. The question is how much more is a REPU worth over and above the last sale, not how much less. There will be condition and location differences, but generally, to our advantage is the fact that prices are appreciating.

All interested REPU owners should document their truck and its value, especially... ESPECIALLY if just purchased or sold here: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/mazdarepurotaryenginepickup/
in the datbase link.

This is so important because insurance companies are always looking to pay you LESS for an aging vehicle that is in an accident, total it, and get it off their rolls, for profit motives only. And if you carry comprehensive, then you are exposing yourself to getting a salvage title for a minor accident after YOUR own insurance company determines it is a TOTAL. So to avoid salvage titles and insufficient insurance benefits, ALL REPU owners should be arguing for higher values, NOT lower ones.

Do you work for an insurance company?

Not arguing for lower values here. Just tellin' it like it is.

And yes, I do think recent sales are used in formulating the value of things. They do it in appraising houses, antiques, paintings, etc...

The next time one turns up on this board or Ebay and it goes for $3000, it wasn't me arguing for lower values, it was the bidders. I already got one.

Hopefully, with time, it will keep inching forward. Until then I will just keep catching the stares and puzzled glances from the people at the gas pumps, mumbling to themselves - what is that thing?

PEACE!

REPU Values

And that is why I have all the Ebay ads on REPU's that are selling around $7000.00. Plus the one Where Bruce Toski Bought the one in Washington for $14,000 I think. (I bid it myself to $10,000) Plus he has had it on ebay and I think got it bid again to over $10,000. I have these at work somewhere or I could give exact #'s. But if mine gets wiped out you can bet you butt the insurance companies will be seeing that file!

RE: What's 'available'/for sale out there -- Location, location, location. And timing.

(...and then there's *actual* condition, as vs. supposed/stated/'pictured'...)

Fleabay can cut both ways, IMO -- In other words, sometimes it can be the lowest common denominator, essentially helping to devalue otherwise rare and valuable things... and they *still* get their cut...

...and then there's still the effect of this so-called "economy"... (again, also depending upon timing and location.)

As previously noted, insurance company values are not generally beneficial.

Numbers continue to shrink - I think you can pretty much count on that.
