REPU Repower

My 74 is anxiously awaiting its new power plant. The old 4 port 13b finally gave up, so I had Rob at Pineapple Racing build a new engine for me. He built a 4 port, bridge ported, 13b that would be able to utilize my current intake and exhaust set-up. I have added a cold fusion nitrous system to the mix with a stand alone fuel system and MSD box to electronically retard the timing when using nitrous.

While he had the motor we had the pressure plate rebuilt into a dual diaphram (dual spring) set-up and had the 4 puck clutch re-pucked, and added a turbo throw-out bearing for good measure. He also had a cast water pump rebuilt and added a yohoo belt so I dont risk overheating the engine if I throw the alternator belt.

I picked up a new RB header and heat shield and had them coated with a special high temp application.

The fuel cell has been relocated to the front of the bed and off to the passenger side to aid in weight distribution and ease the fueling process.

This weekend I got the two fuel pumps installed, as well as all new stainless braided fuel lines for each pump and regulator.

I also wire wheeled the alternator as it was looking grungy after so many years of diligent service, and painted a few of the mounting brackets for the nitrous and fuel regulators.

Next is to sort out the wiring harness. My REPU has nothing in the way of heater/fan/defroster etc, nor does it have any of the smog control or any of that stuff. As such I need to figure out which of the wires are extra and which are not.

I think next weekend the engine is going to find its way into the engine bay so I can work out the mounting locations for the regulators and nitrous solenoids.

I have ordered an electric fan and thermostat to keep things cool for the Griffin radiator. The oil cooler has been flushed, pressure tested, and repainted.

With the fuel lines plumbed, it now time to wire them and get the MSD set-up in place.

I think I need a dry erase board to keep up with the many little things that still need to happen.

Nice work there. It should scoot real good. The irons and aluminum housings should be coated or sealed with something to prevent corrosion.

I found this neat stuff called AlumaGlow that boaters use for aluminum stuff. Works great. I coated my aluminum oil pan with it and it's a nice thick clear coat that lasts 3-5 YEARS. Glossy too.

Truck and motor look very good, but honestly the wheels look so cheap.

EricRyan - Well that is an opinion. These wheels, while not my first choice, were on the truck when I purchased it. The Nitto tires provide tons of grip and a nice ride.

Lets see pictures of your truck...

i think the wheels look great, and options on wheels are scarce to say the least. My only concern is the nos system ,i looked into doing it and what i found is it deforms the apex seals .i still want to do a nos set up just dont want to smoke my motor .maybe you have some good info on the nos topic.

Mattraver

I had this engine purpose built for running nos. As for warped seals, time shall be the determining factor. I will not run the nitrous until the break-in is complete. Then from there I'll be starting with 75 hp shot and slowly work up to the 150 hp. I have jets for 175 and 200, however those will be for track use only and only after I've gotten some experience.

Like anything, with proper planning, implementation and patience, all shall be fine.

At this point my concern is more on getting traction without blowing out my rear end or frying another transmission. Though I think I will be dropping a RX-8 six speed in the truck before too long. Rob at Pineapple has done this and really likes the gear ratios for our trucks. Prior to that though, will be an 8" ford rear end with limited slip rear end. I wanna be able to 1/4 mile and auto cross this truck.

Nothing money can't get done. Right?

I am lucky in that this truck is not my daily driver so I can build it for weekend fun without the worry of daily needs.

I no longer even have a fan or heater controls for that matter. There is a powered bass tube, where the heater box used to live. No smog/emissions etc. Just the basics.

Most people have opinions, I was simply expressing mine along with a compliment about the rest of your truck. You seem really defensive about it, but I meant no harm. And, by the way, you wouldn't want to see current pics of my truck as most of the truck is sanded to bare metal and being prepped for paint...

Engine meets transmission...

The donor heart was successfully transplanted into its host yesterday afternoon. After some persuasion and just the right alignment I was able to get the engine and trans paired up yesterday. I was then able to install the new racingbeat heat shield and header. I also reinstalled the recently flushed and pressure tested oil cooler and installed the alternator and belt.

Next is to get the fuel pressure regulators, and nitrous solenoids located into the most advantageous spots as is possible. I will also need to mount the Wide Open Throttle sensor/switch to the carb. Which also got a rebuild done with new float. I have a feeling this new engine is going to be a bit more of a challenge to tune or dial in as far as fuel is concerned. Ah heck, so too will be getting the timing all sorted out.

The timing will consist of standard dual coils for daily driving and then an MSD 6A with timing retard box and single coil (deactivated trail coil) when using the nitrous. This is in lieu of buyin a second MSD 6a and second MSD timing retard box. I will lose negligible power and reduce the likelyhood of a lean misfire (those kill motors).

New electric fan and accessories, as well as as few more fuel system components are on the way. New filter elements for the pre-pump filter, and the post pump filter as well as one for the nitrous line. (Come on UPS)

Unfortunately, I will have to get some exhaust work done as the new header, while having a better height (ie more ground clearance) has a different flange than the old one. (I feel sorry for my neighbors. Its gonna get loud pretty soon) The good news is the exhaust guy can also put in a few new hangers as most of the old ones are SHOT.

Here are a few photos of Sundays accomplishments.

I actually like those wheels; they look like they'd be fairly light, and big enough to end up with a near-stock total wheel+tire dimension...

Care to share the make, size, offset, cost, etc.?

Great work. Just add fuel, oil, and spark!

It was a good idea to mount the fuel cell above the bed floor. Exhaust makes the passenger side of the bed floor warm.

keep on truckin

Well with a 4 day weekend I had a bit of time to get some more work done, even if some of the work was a bit of a set-back. I was surprised to find that the plates were beginning to rust. SO, I pulled the motor back out and painted them...

I then took the extra steps and sanded and primed/painted a bit of the engine bay (as well as the trans bell-housing) to help prolong the life and fend off a bit of rust on the 35 year old chassis.

I remounted the radiator, straightened out the bent fins and installed the electric fan.

The fuel lines are all securely mounted and installed, except the line from the primary fuel line 2nd filter to the pressure regulator that will feed the carb. Im waiting on a few parts to complete this. The fuel return line has also been upgraded to the matching stainless lines.

I disassembled and cleaned the two parts of the intake manifold, installed a new gasket, and remounted the carb.

Ive also fabricated, out of sheet aluminum, a cover plate for the inspection port on the top back portion of the engine as well as mounts for the retainer spring, electric fan, and fuel pressure regulators.

to do list:
- fabricate a few more brackets for the nitrous solenoids
- wiring for the electric fan, MSD ignition and retard box, 2nd fuel pump, fog lights, trail coil cut-off, electric bottle opener, nitrous solenoids, purge valve, ignition, battery kill switch, fuse breaker, etc.
- install main fuel pressure regulator
- buy and install radiator hoses
- oil, fuel, coolant
- buy and install NOS pressure gauge (exterior)
- buy and install oil pressure pick-up (hmm do i maintain the mechanical gauge or go with a sensor in the engine with electric gauge in the cockpit
- install secondary fuel pressure gauge (exterior)

and more, more, more...

A few more Pictures from this weekend can be found here.

Nitrous...

Well I'd love to tell you that I made huge progress this weekend, but I'd be lying. I did however get a little done. I was able to secure the fuel lines a bit more, as well as protect the lines at possible scuff/abrasion point by wrapping them color coded zipties. Blue for main fuel, red for NOS fuel, black for NOS. In addition, I was able to install the Wide Open Throttle (WOT) switch onto the engine block just below the carb. Lastly, I located and mounted each of the three solenoids and ran the fuel/nos lines to their respective nozzles etc. One solenoid for the fuel feed, one for NOS feed, and one small solenoid for the purge valve.

Here are a few pictures (iPhone pics in really bright light, sorry) you get the idea.

Well Ive decided I prefer to use a more significant fuel filter than the Spectre units I had previously installed, so Ive sent in some extra items to Summit Racing for exchange. This weekend I didnt have as much time as I would have liked, and I was still able to get a few things done.

I discovered the new engine was not tapped for an oil pressure sender, so I called Rob and he was kind enought to send me an alternative (at no charge). I needed to get some threaded studs to fit in place of the bolts as the unit with the oil fliter mount is significantly higher and thus the bolts will not fit. Easy fix. Now I just need the new fitting for the oil pressure line as the old one is not in too good of condition. (cracked from being over tightened)

I was able to get the MSD 6A, a 3rd MSD Blaster coil and MSD Ignition retard box installed, and the factory wiring harness re-positioned so everything will fit on the drivers side inner fender. (i'll need to get some kind of cover to keep the water out, might just use a ziplock container cheap and easy to replace as necessary)

The nitrous kit had to be replumbed as I used PTFE tape and not PTFE paste (oops). Apparently the PTFE tape can break off and plug the nozzles. (thats why I wrote down "read instructions" on my to-do list, DOH!)

I was also able to get the electric fan thermostat control wired and installed.

I didnt take any photos, except of the modified oil pressure sender unit (i trimmed it down a bit and polished it some).

I will post some more photos in the next few days.

To do list:
- Mount nitrous bottle brackets
- Wire fuel pumps
- Wire nitrous kit (solenoids, elec. bottle opener, WOT switch, arming buttons)
- Figure out ignition system (imagine me scratching my head now)
- Wire ignition system
- Wire fog-lights (low priority)
- Remove bucket seats and replace with factory bench (future re-cover)
- re-install silver MOMO steering wheel
- plumb and mount fuel pressure, and NOS pressure gauges
- wire switched power to electric fan control
- on and on and on
- purchase and install radiator hoses (goofy radiator is 1.25" at intake and 1.5" at output flange, water pump and jacket are both 1.25". Huh?)
- add oil
- add fuel
- prime systems
- tow truck to exhaust shop (soon)
- Start and break-in procedures (run at 3000-4000 rpm for 30 minutes, then change the oil).
- build and install Cold air intake (future)
- install roll-cage (future)
- sand and ospho the rust spots (future)
- did I mention on and on and on?
