Disc brake width tolerance

I thought I remembered someone asking for the minimum width of the front disc rotors. If you still need to know:

11mm

That's minimum mind you, they recommend replacement when they get thinner than that.

This info comes from my '76 REPU Mazda workshop manual.

This reminds me, which are you guys more interested in having in PDF format first?

'76 workshop manual
or
'77 wiring diagram

Its going to take me several hours to scan in and re-collate them so I'd like to know which would be more immediately useful to you guys.

Should have at least one up in a couple weeks for you.

Can I still get replacements for those? or are the stock rotors not easy to get.. What about parts from a newer truck?

Craig is the man to ask on that one, he's out friendly neighbourhood parts-man :)

According to my interchange book (which is from '82) the early 80's b-series pickups use the same rotor. I believe that should be good up to at least '84 (possibly '85) so they should probably be available thru Mazda. I wouldn't know about other parts houses.

Again, Craig would know for sure if a workable part can still be had from Mazda.

If you need the interchange pages you can grab it here:

Martin is correct...

Mazda used the same brake rotor from 74-84, its still available for about $100 each. Carparts.com has beck arnley
rotors (reboxed japanese parts) for $45 each, part #083-0117.

Is there an issue

with being able to run the stock wheel centers with any of these? (Kinda like the difference between the courier and 'actual' REPU version...)?

I assume you mean in terms of either offset or overall diameter being diff than fatory REPU rotors.

Too my knowledge no, there are no differences and there should be no issue in using the B-series rotors with stock wheels (or whatever wheels were working with your REPU rotors).

Here's a question for you:

Is anyone interested in either:

a) Bigger brakes up front
b) Disc conversion for the back?

I'm going to look into the first option for myself as I rebuild my truck. The second may be more of a pipe dream.

I'd like to put a two-piston caliper up front with a ventilated front rotor. Since its already setup up for disc fronts this might not be as hard. Different rotor with same bolt pattern, and a new backplate for the caliper. Wheel fitment is the only issue.

Ideally disc rears would be nice, but wow, that's a project and a half.

Carparts.com sent me the wrong rotors, i had to send em back after a long multi-day argument about how they wern't the right part. They kept arguing that my truck was modified and thats why the rotors wouldn't fit

did you find...

something else that fit correctly? I`m going to be doing front brakes in the near future and would like to find something cheaper than the factory rotors.

...oh and on further recollection, they sent me the wrong bearings too.

i was fortunate to find rotors on ebay, and got them at a great price. but, i guess i deserved that after my truck was off the road for over a year waiting on rotors.

who knows carparts.com may have corrected the problem. I still use carparts.com, but i don't rely on them for research. I always get my parts numbers elsewhere then see if they have it.

I'd like a bigger front brake setup with vented rotors. 1 piston caliper is fine, 2 better. Wheel fitment would be an issue as I and most others don't want to buy new wheels, so bolt pattern would need to be the same and if we can fit a larger rotor in there and still use the stock 14" rims that would be key.

My point/question...

...was not fitment of any wheels... but of the stock wheel center caps, which require the 'lip' on which the rubber 'gripper' seats, which holds them in place... My experience sez the courier version works in all other aspects, but not in this one little way--and I'll hazard a guess this is also true for any more-recent-than-REPU mazda versions as well... Just a thought, for those of us wishing to continue running the stock wheel center caps...
(They do fit and look good over the steel mitsubishi rims too!...)

factory courier rotors should work

I checked the mazda/ford parts crossover book, mazda part# 1854-33-251 is the same as ford part# D77Z 28301A. Mazda used that number from 74-84, I`m not sure about the courier. Perhaps the courier rotors that Klaus has dealt with were aftermarket? Anyway looks like I`ll have to cough up the extra bucks for the factory ones.

Rotor, and hub assembly

Klaus, It has been my experience that the Mazda rotor is bolted to the hub with 4 or 6 bolts from the back side. The hub is where the center cap actually grips to the rubber ring and where the wheel bolts to. Please correct me if I am wrong. How are things in the great Northwest. Weather in the Southeast has been great for the REPU projects.
