Looking Good.........

Are you going to go for any striping when paint is done? It looks like you went for an original shade green. Nice.

she had the optional dealer installed chrome trim with black rubber insert. i kept the pop rivet holes in there, i'll put new on myself. got my own pop riveter. also the paint shop has a wall display of chrome trim, i'll prolly buy from them.

thanks for the compliments. yes, i liked the factory color too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! everyone kept asking me what color i was going to paint it...... i dunno why, the factory green is nice

1 Day Paint and Body shop chain

They do lots of volume, better quality than Maaco or Earl Scheib.

I got their top notch paint job: sand, primer, sand with guide coat and reprimer, 3 coats base, 1 coat clear. paint door jambs, underside of hood, engine compartment *edges*, and they also painted the inside of the doors!

$1600 paint; $900 for extra bodywork and a new windshield.

$2500 out the door.

You definitely get what you pay for. Keep in mind Brad that a lot of people would call you crazy for spending $1,600 on paint. "Maaco will do it for $400!"

$1,500 is just about as cheap as a decent paint job gets period, it sounds like you got a pretty decent deal for the work you're getting.

Since I've more or less accidently built a pretty good setup in my fathers shop (dry air setup, walled off booth, lights for drying, etc) I'm leaning more towards doing all the paint myself.

Its not that I'm looking to save the money so much (although the extra $2,000 does pay for most of a motor) as I've come to find that with almost every other stage of the truck that if I read and research enough, and just take it slow and careful I can do almost anything myself. The key seems to be just taking it slow and easy, not getting itno a rush.

If I screw it up I can always sand it back down to primer and send it out to be done and I won't really be out that much. Plus if I do it myself I can paint it in pieces which is what I prefer to do anyway but that would be problematic hauling components to the body shop :)

Good luck with it Brad, it looks awesome. What have you got planned for the interior?

Take it Slow!! What?, are you kidding Martin...

What kind of theory is that?

You know, I've heard or read somewhere that if your good, you can "restore" a vehicle in something like 30 or so days?

Ha Ha Ha...

Anyway, your right on that virtually any decent paint is going to cost $1500 + min. That is mainly because the paint is going to cost at least $250, the labor is not free, and the environmental regulation and booth time is also far from free.

You absolutely right that with proper equipment, any person with basic abilities and patience can put on a very nice paint job, but it is also perfectly fine in my book for someone to have someone else paint it if they have the dollars. You are one of the few who have space and setup to do it. We just did a frame in a booth we fabbed like yours with a plastic booth, and it worked great.

Even my DIY frame cost somewhere like $400.00 so far and I'm not even close to done yet.

Yeah that's sort of the restoration plan I've got for my convertible. Get that dent pounded out, paint the bumpers, throw in a new battery and voila.

Course that's not really fair I guess. There are different levels of restoration and a 'rolling restoration' is a lot less work. But I think when most people say 'restoration' they are thinking about taking it down to the fasteners and reconditioning/replacing everything.

I won't say it can't be done in 30 days, just saying I've never met anyone who could do it and that's including the few full-time restoration shops I've visited to get tips.

A full tear-down rebuild usually takes 3-6 months seems to be the consensus, and that's with having an engine guy/mechanic, body guy, interior guy and gofer all in one shop.

My cousin is into the street rod thing and his stuff is totally beautiful, I just wish it was more my style. Not funky enough :)

His '34 3-window was in Duponts '03 calender. You can check it out here:

His is in the top-right corner. Or directly here:

I have to say most people who share this interest/hobby are so easy to talk to and always want to share stories and tips. I've been lucky I guess, everyone's taken an interest in my project and wants to lend a hand or at least the benefit of their experience/mistakes.

I believe the words "Restore" or "Restoration"......

should be used only when one is willing to give attention to each and every detail of the vehicle.

It's not that everthing has to be taken apart or replaced, it's just that IMO a restoration means that every detail has to be looked at and brought to working or visually pleasing detail. Short of that, the book is open, and there are LOTS of very nice cars in very nice condition that run extremely well and fast, but I would not necessarily say they have been "restored". But with that said, cars don't have to be "Restored" to be sweet either.

My personal favorites are just nice and clean, well running cars that get road time. And yes, they have rock chips, some scratches, dirt and wear, but damn, isn't that what it is all about. Making them cool, and driving them.

And no, I do not believe anyone can restore any car in 30 days, unless it doesn't need restoring in the first place......

Thanks ovquick, everyone I've showed pics to rotorheads or otherwise really like the color. I think I'll be very very happy with it. Kind of a medium green color. Can't wait to put it back together and drive it to work!
