falls on its face

intermittent st..st..st..stuttering under hard acceleration in first and second gear only. my truck (79ford courier by the way 2.0l) dose this anywhere between 15-25 mph in 1st gear and 30-40 in second. i'm wondering if the dist. isn't able to advance quick enough to keep it in time. the dist is a breakerless type with 4 magnetized points and a rotating 4 point star. any help out there. when i get the money together i'm going rotary.

Some things are common to all types of

...infernal combustion engines...: Your problem *could* be fuel-related, or electrical-related. Your description could be crap in the carb. clogging your jets (or injectors, as the case may be)--or, crap anywhere in the fuel system, from the tank pickup tube forward, for that matter.
Or, it could be as simple as what just befell my 323,(for example): Damage to a plug wire boot at the dizzy cap allowing for arcing between that wire and the coil wire. A new set of wires and all was cured! (Though I did a full tuneup at the same time.)
