Dellorto low-down

O.K. Brad, I'm taking you up on your generous offer to 'go public' with everything Dellorto in your brain! My personal particulars are an R-5 plated 'j-spec' 4-port 13B, with the stock porting that it came with in (?) chassis... 1st-gen electronic ignition, and a Racing Beat header installed...
Also of interest would be setup particulars to run on an otherwise totally stock '84/'85 GSL-SE 6-port... (header being a requirement, natch)...
I'm aware of CB Performance, Carb's Unlimited, Gower & Lee, and Eurocarb Ltd. ...but it sounds like direct to Italy is 'the way'...do you speak/read/write Italian, or do they 'do' English?
Racing Beat still sells manifolds and foam filters...

Hi Klaus, glad to help. Can't offer everything I know dellorto: getting one to work on a bridgeport will cost a case of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale!!!

R5 starting jetting:
235 main fuel
225 main air. might need to go up or down 005 on this
80 idle fuel jet
Keep all other jets as supplied by RB
2.25psi fuel pressure. Everyone and their mother swears by 4.5psi on 2bbl sidedrafts on a rotor motor but in my 5 years of experience that is too much and it overflows the float bowl. I can see fuel dripping out velocity stacks @ idle.

75+ gph fuel pump

GSL-SE: pretty much the same. Those 6 port motors do not flow as much or make as much power as a 4 port so might not need as much fuel @ topend.

I have a buddy who goes to Europe every few years and picks up Dellorto parts. If/when he scores some 3.00 needle and seats I'll be reselling them oh yeah!

I rebuild Dellortos on the side if interested. $100 labor + parts. Just shipped one to Canada.

So, Brad...:

...do you also offer the 'parts' (ie, rebuild kits) at identical price, whether you do the rebuild or not?
If it ever came down to it, I'd be offering a case of microbrewed Pale Ale that's superior to Sierra, if you so chose...!

I sell Dellorto rebuild kits: two rebuild kits

for $50 both + shipping. one package = two kits.

if you'd like me to rebuild your dell and u supply the rebuild kit then I don't charge for the kit.

I've been meaning to go up to PacNorthwest and go microbrew tasting. My buddy goes to Portland for their annual brewfest and has a BLAST. Been to Seattle and went to a brewery not too far from the Space Needle, in the heart of the city. Good Beer.

Always open to trying new pale ales and IPA's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well...

...I just paid too much for that 'last' rebuild kit in-stock here, stateside--and it came with the *wrong* (150) inlet needle valve/seat... Aargh!
So... what size are you supplying with your kits, if the 3.00 one is currently N/A ?
I don't have a problem rebuilding my own...(except for getting the proper bits)... just wish I had an ultrasonic tank, so I could avoid all the nasty solvents...
Thanks for the info./tips, though!
Makes sense to me about the low pressure/high volume fuel delivery requirements... kinda like what gives good laminar flow characteristics for gases at the torch... Makes me wonder if there might be benefits to a larger diameter fuel line/pickup tube...

PS--If you like IPA's, have you tried the hoppiest one on the planet yet? That would be Anderson Valley 'Boont' IPA, from N. Cal, AV Brewery... gotta love it!

Some rebuild kits include the needle and seat, some don't. Mine does not. Mine have lots of o-rings and paper gaskets.

150 is a very common size for needle and seats; so I can see them being in the kits. I also have had 225 come in rebuild kits and have several of them.

I take my oil coolers to Ultrasonic Cleaning in Carson, CA on main street. Google it for phone number. They do a real good job.

I've used 5/16" fuel line on my 12a streetport spinning it to 9,000rpms on the road race tracks. Didn't need any bigger line. If that motor had 85psi oil pressure and was high rpm clearanced and carbon sealed it would be running today :(

As far as fuel delivery goes, I reccomend replacing the thing you slide the fuel line on the carb (banjo) with one that has one inlet and a smaller outlet. Outlet is for the fuel return to the tank where it'll cool off. And it's easier on the fuel pump.

I drank two tallboy Anderson Valley Boone IPA's in the last week. Very good, one of my favourites. I buy some when I see my parents up north. :0

...makes perfect sense...

...using the stock-type inlet fitting so's not to mess w./ the pump/fuel return line setup.
Is 2.25 the largest needle/seat in your posession? What would it take to trade you a 1.50 for one of those, or bigger? ETA on your friend's next trip?
I'll likely take you up on your gasket kit offer soon...
Do they consist of reproductions, or 'actual' 'NOS' gaskets? I've considered the economics of reproducing rare gaskets before...
About that jet reamer kit you mentioned... what were the details again, and how much $$ ?
Seems there'd be a whole business in supplying the aftermarket for theses carb's... Just watched a clean one bring in excess of $450 on ebay. How extreme was Racing beat's 'package deal' w./ the manifolds when the were selling 'em? They said they were sending me the current price list for everything the (still) sell...

Yes.

Don't need 1.50 I'll sell 2.25 for $15.00

ETA on your friend's next trip?

Wish I new! He tends to go during the summer but so far has not left this year.

I'll likely take you up on your gasket kit offer soon...

The packaging has the factory Dellorto logo on them. Authentic.

I've considered the economics of reproducing rare gaskets before...

cbperformance.com jet reamer kit and jet gauge/measurer (they have 2 sizes of gauge, small < ~120 and large > ~120)

Seems there'd be a whole business in supplying the aftermarket for theses carb's...

Here and there. They're not made anymore and there is some demand, but Weber is the big name in 2bbl carbs . . . .

Just watched a clean one bring in excess of $450 on ebay. How extreme was Racing beat's 'package deal' w./ the manifolds when the were selling 'em?

Extreme? It was a good deal. In 1989 the kit for my 12a was $589.00 . . Then went up to almost 7 bills, then NLA.

They said they were sending me the current price list for everything the (still) sell

They don't have a lot. Mainly some jets, gaskets, manifolds, filters, and manifold allen bolts.

Hey Brad...

I talked to Racing Beat again today... and let 'em in on you as a source for kits, and rebuilding... so, if anyone from there--or any of their customers--get a hold of you, well... please remember me, and save me a couple'a kits before they're all gone forever!
Hope you don't mind...

No prob Klaus. Sounds good. I should grab some more rebuild kits just in case. Saturday I talked to my buddy who goes to europe for vacation and Dellorto parts. He said his vacation this year was Disneyland with the kids last week. No plans to go to Europe anytime soon. :( :(

Although probablly unrelated, guy from rx7club.com did contact me yesterday and wants me to rebuild his carb. I do enjoy doing it. Time to buy some more solvent.......and latex gloves......

I just wished I had some 3.00 needle and seats :(

Update...:

Thanks for asking, guys. The shameful truth: I've been busy, busy, busy just trying to catch up on my regular 'eke out a living' work. Just made one of several work deadlines; the heat wave sure didn't help matters, either. Tom mentioned in another thread about not being motivated to swap clutch master cylinders in 110 degree heat; just imagine working over a torch and next to a kiln when the outside temperature is in the 90's or more... It really sucks the life right outta a guy!
So, the Dell's been sitting, as have all things REPU, let alone automotive... I have too much needs done. (Anyone wanna come help paint my house, and install a woodstove, etc., etc., etc, before the rainy season?)
I've purchased/ordered a 2.50 needle/seat --biggest available-- from a guy in Italy, but I'm still waiting to receive it. Racing Beat was kind enough to send me the newest incarnation of their famous (and essential!) tech manual/catalogue gratis, after not getting a current price list to me the first go 'round... I still need to get a new filter element, a couple'a gaskets, and two new fuel pumps--not to mention a pressure regulator--before a gone-thru Dell can be installed and run.
(Those pumps get installed in parrallel, right, Brad?)
I don't expect I'll need much tech help--thanks for asking--but I DO need time, $$$, and motivation/energy... all at the same time!
I really do need to narrow my focus, and trim down my REPU collection, just so something actually can progress... meanwhile, I'm still tempted by Dominic's (risc) blue/primer one...
Roaddancer came by about a month ago, (hey, how's it going with your REPU?); he can attest to the state of affairs around here. I need to stay off-line, and out in the driveway WAY more!
There it is.
