Pulled the top off, no ball there at all. Funny, I don't remember one there in the first place, but the truck used to start, so obviously it fell out upon my disassembly unnoticed. Better fuel squirting now!
Getting old is one thing, getting blind SUCKS!
Thanks guys!

A trick for check valve (Ball Bearing) extraction. Use compressed air with a small nozzle. Remove top of carb and push ball bearing out by injection air from the port in the fuel bowl. Place a rag to catch the ball beaing as it breaks free.

Talking Hitachi's with a buddy this a.m. ...
...he reminded me about something I'd forgotten: a brass 'screw' with a hole drilled through it, crosswise, that goes through the vacuum source that runs to/from the secondary actuator assembly/diaphragm. (Accessible from the outside of the carb.) If that 'screw's' hole does not line up properly with the ports on either side, (such as from over/under tightening), secondary actuation will be affected...
If you take it out, make a note of how it needs to be positioned to line up *properly*, and loc-tite it in place in the proper position. ;)

Hmmm..that brings to mind a question..how do we know if the secondarys are opening? I could do the 2nd gen 5th/6th ports trick and loosly put a wire tie on the actuator arm and see if it moves after a spirited drive..
I don't remember seeing the brass screw/hole deal, but if I took it off, I'd bet my little fat beagle that it's not lined up properly.

You'll know...
...if they're opening, or not!
One pedal-to-the-metal at 3.5 to 4 K RPM run in second on an on ramp'll answer that.
