Ignition voltage

What should the voltage be on the ignition wire at the starter? I am pulling 11.75 ...........think maybe my starters gone bad sitting four years.

Try cleaning *all* connections.

Very small amounts of spray electrical contact cleaner, (such as Caig or Cramoline brand "De-Ox-It"), a small(brass)wire brush, and some elbow grease can go a long way. Don't forget all of the grounds!

I'm not sure off the top of my head precisely what the voltage at your starter 'ought' to be -- but the closer to 13 it is, the better. If you suspect your starter, you can always test it by jumping it directly from a known good battery.

Is your ignition switch still the stock original? They do tend to give out at some point, as well.

In any case, just about everything's easier to track down and fix than voltage losses due to compromised, aging wiring... that may be hidden within the insulation...

Thanks, I cleaned all the connections and was able to get the voltage up to 12.3 but the starter is shot..........got to wait till tomorrow for another to arrive :(

I still have the factory ignition and key with rotory emblem on it which is really cool but the ignition does look suspect like it has gotten hot(plastic looks melted on the back). If I end end up needing one, what have you found to be a good replacement?

I think there was something...

...under the KIA name that worked, I recall. Damned if I can remember the part # by now, though! Something about what came off the assembly line back in the days when KIA and Mazda were close...(?)

I have a wells LS462 ignition lock with keys here... but it's been a while, and I have not yet verified that it will work as a direct replacement.

You may also want to search some older threads around here.

Maybe the starter solenoid is stuck. A well placed hammer shot might get it to work. Good luck.

Yea I tried the hammer. After thinking about it I rememeber when I was last driving it the starter would stick when it was hot. I pulled it and had it checked and it was bad.........can't wait for that new one to get here in the morning, it's been four long years since I've had her on the road.

I went through starter issues, too. I eneded up getting one from an rx-7 in junkyard. I swapped out the pinion gear from my bad starter into the used one. I'm also using a tranny from an rx-7.

The one they sent had the correct part # but the nose cone was different then mine. I'll see what I get Tuesday, I may have to do like you did or have this one rebuilt. I also have the 5 speed tranny.

If you're not the original owner the truck most likely has an rx7 tranny.

Just remembered something... I swapped out the nose cone assembly (including pinion) from the bad starter that was bolted to the tranny onto the new/used starter body. If I remember correctly, to swap out assemblies...remove top of starter that inserts into tranny. There is a bushing attached to the shaft that inserts into the top. Use a socket and press the bushing down. Under the bushing is a snap ring. Remove this and everthing else is gravy. It's hard to know what you have. You may have an rx7 tranny and flywheel or repu flywheel. The repu flywheels are bigger and have a different tooth count on ring gear. Good luck.

It's an Rx7 tranny but I am not sure about the fly wheel. My dad is the original owner and it's hard to rememeber what all you've done sometimes. I am going to count the the teeth on the starter to be sure when the new one arrives tomorrow.

That's great news!

Just to be clear, which flywheel does that starter part # apply to?

Checked out the part# at autozone online. It's for REPU with manual transmission. They are showing different starters for manual and automatic.
