Driveshaft Center Support Bearing

Anyone had one of these go bad? I tried searching, but the search function doesn't seem to be working right.

I recently called onlinemazdaparts to try to get one, and they said they would have to try Japan, because there were none left in the US.

If they can't get it, does anyone have any suggestions? I see a bearing listed on some autoparts stores, but not the entire support. I'd prefer to change the whole assembly, if possible.

Any tips/tricks for this repair? You guys thing I should change out the U Joints while I'm in there?

Thanks

Mark

perhaps b1800 center bearing would work? i'd take it to a driveshaft shop, aftermarket might have it.

definately replace ujoints while it's out.

Dan our administrator got a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft that alleviates this issue.

I haven't looked for it yet...

...but I'd start by going to a bearing company, and see if they have any options that fit.

Sounds like a great opportunity to upgrade to single piece driveline. I'm in the process of doing this now. $250-300 at a local shop...including yoke for T-2 tranny.

National and SKF have listings for the bearing, (bearing only, not the entire assembly) but no seals. I'd have to get them from Mazda.

SKF: 6205J, National: 205

But now you guys have me thinking about converting to a single piece driveline. Does anyone know of any drawbacks to doing this? Just trying to figure why Mazda went 2 piece in the first place. My GTX has a 2 piece as well, but on a transverse-mounted engine, it makes more sense...

I've read about several people upgrading to the TII trans... How far off does the shifter end up? Also, I assume you need a TII starter as well... Do you need the TII clutch and FW too? I thought the TII uses like a 235mm clutch vs 225 on an na car. Unless the FW diameters are the same, the starter would not engage the smaller ring gear, yes?

Changing to a T-2 is a big upgrade. You have to use a turbo starter and flywheel. If you have an old series engine you're better off buying light weight after market flywheel with appropriate counter balance weight for your series of engine. I just modified a T-2 tranny for my truck. I had to adapt a shifter mount from 81-85 rx-7 and shorten the rod that goes from the shifter down to the shift forks in the tranny. Sounds kinda complicated but wasn't too hard. Just have to remove the tailshaft. the new tranny shifter is about 1" off center towards the rear. As far as going single piece driveline....the only concern I've heard of is too shsrp of an angle on the front U-joint can damage bearing on tailpiece of tranny. I took some photos of my T-2 mod process. Get me your email address and I can send them. Maybe this is a good opportunity to figure out how to post pics in the gallery.

Just a guess:

Might the two-piece design have been considered more "heavy duty" at the time? Or, perhaps it was just standard Japanese truck practice, kinda like the battery box, and location...?
