Shift lever on tranny swap question

Hey Guys

Just finishing up the 4 to 5 speed tranny swap, playing around with the gears for the first time (engine off), I noticed the long reach, weird feel of the thing. Got to looking closer, the guide pin on the original tranny facing the back, the new 5 has the guide pin towards the front, forcing the original REPU stick ass-backards. Guide pin for the groove on the ball of the stick, I mean, if this makes any sense.
Guess I shoulda got the 5 speed stick when I had the chance, or do you guys do something different?

Yeah, I mean it'll work fine, but with the knob on, 4th gear is a knuckle bumper against the dash, 5th is a long reach.
I guess the original shifter that came with the 5 speed tranny would be ideal. Would any shifter from any 5 speed RX7 work in that SA tranny I wonder?

I used the RX7 shifter. The shifter is quite low compared to the repu one and kinda hits the bench but I really like it. Did you try to swap the whole tower from the 4 speed to the 5 speed? When I did mine, I could not get the repu shifter to work (jammed up) in the RX7 trans, but I only tried swapping the shifter by the 3 bolt circular retainer, not the whole tower.

Nope..

The only part that is REPU original tranny-wise on my truck is the shifter. Wonder if I could swap the towers?
I AIN'T dropping the trans again to do it..that's for sure!
I'll either leave it as is, or look for a 7 shifter.
Would an FB shifter work, or does it have to be an SA one?

Update..dummy me strikes again..

All I had to do was swap the silly tower. The bolts were hidden by the grime. Now looks/feels just like the original. Even had room to do it in the truck, no problem.
Aren't these ol' trucks fun!

What the ?!?

You swapped in a 5-speed, and didn't start by cleaning it?

...and with all the work you've put into your truck... for shame!

Actually the NEW tranny gleams like a new penny, I scrubbed the bejesus out of it before it went in. I just didn't see the bolts after it was it, the went to look on the old old grime covered one, yada.
Good point though.

Speaking of...still an issue here. With the tower of the SA on (shifter backwards) all is well, but with the REPU tranny tower installed (repu shifter in the right place) it won't go in freakin' reverse. The innards of the towers look the same, other than the guide pins. The both have the spring-pin thing in the right side (whazitfor?) I might be able to just reverse the SA tower, but that would put the spring-pin thingy on the LEFT side (whathehellzitdo?).
Ideas?

Space it up a few mm and it may just go into reverse. Use a couple extra gasekts or make a spacer. I once made one out of aluminum. Then I found a genuine '77 REPU 5 speed shifter. Lucky me.

Thanks, I'll play around with it this evening and see what I come up with.
Boy, that new tranny sure is smooth and quiet, though..:)

Just a little shifter update..

The SA shifter was just not right for me with this new 5 speed, going into 5th was a long reach. Plus, it was a bit short. Using the original repu shifter was worse, facing backwards with a longer reach. I took it to a local welding shop a few days ago. They cut a small groove in it just above the ball, gently pulled it back, then welded the gap shut. The angle is now exactly reverse of what it was, making it perfect for the new tranny.
Kind of out of the box, huh? Works, great, though.
