Gears for Rearend
I was wondering what are the gears in the rearend of a 87 Mazda B2000 extend cab. The truck came with a 5 speed manual still I swap in a V8. But I seem to be getting 6 miles to the gallon and we are thinking its because of the gearing.
perferable
1. Where can I get some taller gears for the rearend?
or
2. What is a rearend that will fit in from another vehicle that could handle a stock V8 and needs only minor mods to fit.
Save my gas milage....

I cant be sure but it might be 4:11 gears. if your running a 4 speed non overdrive with the 4:ll gears, well, theres your problem. thats probably a 6 lug pattern right? if you want to do a swap on it to put a chevy s-10 rear end in it and front in conversion to an s-10 taht would be good. lot of trouble though. It would allow you to have drop spindles and more wheel choices. Just depends on how far you want to go.

If I remember correctly, the mazda rearend was a third member type, similar to most ford rear wheel drives. It is probably outsourced by mazda from a company in japan (or even here!)that makes lots of rearends. Check with your knowledgeable wrecking yard people and see if they have a cross fit book. You might get lucky!

People have said the REPU diff is like the common ford 9 inch. They look similar, but I've never compared them side by side.

Well I have found the mod for the saginaw 4 speed that I have in it currently.
http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/overdrive.htm
I'm hoping this will solve the rpm problem since it almost makes it a 8 speed but first I would like to find more info on the mod.

wow that mod that guy did was really, really smart. i cant beileve no one had thought of that before. That opens up some new possibilites for using an older 4 speed instead of trying to find a new overdrive like a t5 or t56.
