Oil change!!

I am going to change the oil in my rotary pickup. Most of you know I just picked it up. I would like to change the oil in it, so I know its been changed. The oil in it right now looks nice and clean. I just want to know that its 100% clean and when it was done last. So what I am asking is what type of oil should I us? I am new to the whole rotary engine thing. I have had my Rx2 for almost a year, but I have never gotten a motor for it yet.

What type of Motor oil should I us?
What type of oil filter would be a good one to us?

1974 Repu - runs and drives
1976 Rx4 - no engine or trans (klaus42 old 4)

OH THE GREAT OIL DEBATE

what oil to run in rotary engines is probably the most debated issue among rotary engine enthusiasts.

I'll just say i use Castrol 20W50.

oil and filter

Agree with Wankel Dreams the great oil debate. I use Havoline 20w50. I have to take my truck to the Midwest Rotary Rally in a few weeks to be displayed, and was trying to find a oil filter other than Fram [heard some bad things about em}. Ended up buying Purolator L20073.

all my street racer buddies I used to know beat the crap out of their cars and swore by Valvoline. For the rotary, I prefer the semi-synthetics as a good balance of characteristics and price.
In tests in the mid 70s, Castrol was the only oil tested that actually met the specs claimed for viscosity, pour point, etc. So, that would also be excellent. It's nice to get what you think you are paying for.

I've found that

20W50 is actually stiff enough to slow RPM pickup, in all but the hottest conditions... I like Valvoline 10W40 for general use--changed often. The shortest of the filters are generally considered superior...perhaps because they fill quicker (?) The pro's seem to swear by the factory one; I just run whatever, and change 'em often. Without a doubt, the best full-on synthetics on the market, (AmSoil. Redline, Royal Purple, MObil One), have something to offer rotary reliability and longevity. But I'd still wanna change it every 5 to 7 K, and that's spendy!
If you really wanna do a 100% oil change, remember to also drain your oil cooler from it's lower plug...otherwise, a percentage of used oil will remain in the system.

Napa GOLD part number 1182

had fantastic filtering qualities and is a BIG TALL filter. Pleanty if filtering element to screen out the bad stuff.

$11.65 at your local NAPA store. As they say, you get what you pay for!!!

I've compared it to Purolater Plus and my oil has less particles in it with the GOLD filter.

Made a new REPU accquaintance...

...here in my vicinity; talking on the phone, he indicated good results using Mobil One 15W50, (as opposed to the other viscosities they offer)...
