I wish I would have paid more attention to the markings on the wires when I did my swap. Just find out which wire turns on with the key. Also find which wire goes to the G light on the dash. The other two remain disconnected. You ought to remove the voltage reg too. Then run two jumpers like I did.
Of course that is just one way to do it.

OK here is how I wired it.
B is the big wire from my old alt..(always hot)
S is always hot
L is Keyed hot
E is not used
I removed the voltage regulator.
Jumped WR-WB (S)
Jumped BW-BY (L)
Then at the alt. conect WB-S and BY-L.
I'll let you know if I have any problems.

Does the 90 alternator just bolt in? I thought it had a different bolt hookup pattern...

It depends on your bracket, but yes. You need the long bolt, which is shorter than the long bolt of the early type alts, and the short spacer. A stack of washers will work, but they're kinda ugly.

85 RX alt
Jeff20B and WVoigt I have put a 85 alt on my 74 REPU. The question I have is where the voltage reg was. I only put one jumper on there and everything but the amp gauge works. My question is can you elaborate or take a better pic of the way you have yours wired up so I can get the gauge to work. I really don't want to experiment with the wiring and burn something up.
This description doesn't help:
OK here is how I wired it.
B is the big wire from my old alt..(always hot)
S is always hot
L is Keyed hot
E is not used
I removed the voltage regulator.
Jumped WR-WB (S)
Jumped BW-BY (L)
Then at the alt. conect WB-S and BY-L.
Would it be right that the alt has 12v sitting on it all the time both from the battery and from the windings. With B and S both hot all the time it would seem that way. I was thinking that S and L should be hot only when the key is on.
Looking at the 85 wiring diag, one of the leads goes thru the choke pulloff.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Charles

It works But
I put in the 1990 alternator and wired it as I posted. It works fine. But your right no amp meter. I'll look at my wiring diagram and let you know if I find out why?
