Taking off the bed

Anyone ever taken off the bed? I think I'd like to get the thing re painted and have the undercarage treated for some rust... I would imagine it is fairly easy, just have to bust loose some rusted bolts... but how many? Anything else to look out for?

Shoot all the bolts with a good penatraiting oil about 3 days before hand. Then repeat every day until the day you decide to pull it off.
The 8 or 10 main bolts come out. Some of the rear harness comes loose. Check your exhaust hanger.I have seen mufflers attached to some funny places before. Very important.Make sure you mark your evaporative tank lines to match their inlet on the gas tank.
I drove around with no bed for a couple of days one time. Talk about smokin the tires at will.

Use Gloves to lift

Charles A/K/A jfaplanet and I lifted one yesterday. It was quite a job until we finally got the heat sheild that was bolted to the bottom of the bed lifted from between the frame rails. It felt like I was going to cut my fingers of so I suggest wearing gloves.

The Bed is off and soon the cab.

Well I got the bed off of the REPU yesterday. Looks like the frame is in pretty good shape for 28 yrs old. 4 1/2 in angle grinder with a twisted wire cone works wonders on rust. Took me about an hour to clean the back and top half of the frame all the way to bare metal. I'm going to post pictures on the web site if anyone wants to see a REPU in parts. The cab will be coming off next so I can get to the frame under it and then flip the frame and do the underside before I treat the bare metal, then primer and paint it Black again. The pics are listed under REPU at:

Color

What color are you thinking of painting that truck Charles? I am still trying to find the contact number of the guy who made the fiberglass valence panel.

...or howabout this for a crazy idea: a one-piece, lightweight, tilt-forward frontend--hood, fenders, & valance--designed to accept stock grill, etc. ... ?
As far as the color, I'd vote for stock REPU Mazda blue w./ reproduction white stripe/lettering kit!
