New owner, new questions (rust).

Just picked up my first REPU, smiled all the way home! It runs great as the engine was rebuilt only a few K miles ago, so here's some questions:
An age old challenge, I know, but I must deal with surface rust. Has anyone found something that you could treat it with and not come back under new paint? My plan is to do the POR-15 treatment, but I heard that new paint won't stick well to it.
The worst rust by far is the battery box/lid. It is in tatters, literally. Has anyone come up with a way to deal with this, or some kind of replacement>

Far as I recall:

...Brad, Rotormunky, and nwaco (Ken)all have some serious experience/expertise dealing with rust issues. You might want to search through some older threads around other sections here for the details...

I can tell you that some will swear by POR products; others dislike 'em... I would think there's still no better method than removing as much as possible, then coating with Phosphoric Acid to convert any remaining rust, --even invisible specks-- , then the consensus seems to have been shooting aircraft or marine-grade epoxy primer, prior to further finish work.

RE: Battery Box-- If too far gone, your only options are replacement, whether with a better-condition original, or a custom-made one... There was some talk a while ago about making a run of stainless ones; billet aluminum always sounded sweet (and light?) to me...

Perhaps it's time we revisited that idea? Might need to get a hold of Rob at Pineapple Racing; he made the repro valances happen...
