Keeping stock wheels..

I know I've posted a lot lately, just a slow time of year for me work-wise (at least on weekends) and I'm trying to get the restore-REPU ready to PERHAPS take to the dragon for the April meet.

Anyhow, with funds embarrassingly low, I find I have a newly painted blue truck with rust-original wheels. I probably will wirewheel, then paint as a temporary measure.

Any idea what color (steel, I know) they were, shiny, or gunmetal flat? I have all the center caps, so it'd be neat to keep it original for now. A color photo would be very cool!

How do y'all feel about that Krylon shiny chrome in a can? I sprayed a rear bumper with that stuff, I was surprised how good it turned out.
Remember, I said TEMPORARY..until a future sandblast and powdercoat.

Opinions welcome!

It's been a while...

...since I've even *seen* a stock wheel, let alone one with original paint on it... were they that "Argent" silvery color (same as grille center section)?

I generally don't trust 'chrome silver' in a spray can, but since you're saying it's temporary anyway, you could do *whatever* and not worry about it too much!

Argent silver....seems like I've seen that on a rattle can someplace.
I did one wheel with the silver. It's ah...bright. Not sure I like it. I'd post pics but you guys are ruthless and would laugh..:)

Stock wheels

Take a look at a can of Duplicolor HWP102 "Graphite". That looks kinda like the original, except the original was a semi gloss, kinda medium gray mettalic.
Over the years I have tried,
1. Gloss Black, not too bad
2. A matt silver, not too good
3. Matching the truck color, not too bad.
Paint one each color you like, stand back and eyeball it.

I picked up some rustoleum 'professional' aluminum. Cap looked pretty good. I'll see if i can find the graphite as well. Might follow the advise and paint all 4 different and post on the forum, maybe as a poll.

Might be fun!

A poll sounds like fun. Let me know if you need help setting it up... I don't think anyone's done a poll around here in years!

wheel color

I went thru the same thing a couple of years ago-getting the truck ready for a show. Klaus is correct, the color is Argent. As the truck had the orig tires on it and did not want to drive on them, I got some wheels at the junkyard sandblasted them and went to the body shop at the Mazda dealer in Milwaukee. The manager got me in touch with a paint company they deal with and got the paint and don't forget to use a good etch primer. The paint was a very good match.

Stock Wheels

I've put a picture in my album of my 1974 when it was brand new.(Yes,I still have it)The photo isn't the worlds best but you can see the wheels are not the same color as the center grill color, whatever their names are. You can also see what Stockton Mazda was putting on trucks they sold for trim back then.

Another place to see the orig paint on stock wheels is:
www.rxclubofwi.org
click on members, look up Jeff Klopp REPU
The site has other pix in the archives listed under MRR II,III,IV etc.

I saw that repujeff, another "Mazda Mystery". All of the trucks I saw around central CA 74/75 had the darker wheel color.
1. Did Mazda change the wheel color and when.
2. Did dealers do the wheels themselves like the stripes?
3. Who at Mazda USA would remember?

I emailed Mazda and apperantly their corporate memory doesn't go back to 1974. Wonder if corporations get Alzheimers?

I went to that site, looks like the stock color is the silver..much like what I've already done to two of my wheel.
I thought they'd be darker...

"I thought they would be darker" Well, the ones on mine brand spankin new were darker. It is my opinion they were really darker, but opinions are like some body orifices "most, but not all, folks have one"
So,lacking a specific answer from Mazda, it's opinion and conjecture.
