GROUP BUY -- Front Lower Valance

Ok, all interested in the group buy, reply to this thread.

I know there is one member that has a perfectly good valance in his basement that we should be able to make a mold out of.

I would prefer fiberglass, since it is light weight, and is a bit more flexable than metal!

So, with that said, I'm #1 on this list ;)

Cost

Depends on how many of us there are, and IF it can be done at all. Right now, I want to get a list of interested parties, so I can figure everything out.

If we can keep it reasonable I'll take two for sure.

I'm hoping to be able to reproduce several parts in glass and use those instead of the sheet metal. Sounds paranoid I know, but I'm not losing an authentic grille in good shape cause Granny Smith jumped a curb in the Walmart parking lot.

One for sure;

up to three if the price is right! BTW, 'glass is more durable, but it's my understanding it's far heavier than metal....correct me if I'm wrong. Need I mention timing is everything (likely for a lot of us) as far as affording these--or any--crucial parts... I can run plenty on a credit card, or via PayPal...but currently I'm pretty broke. This does keep changing, tho...
Trade custom glass shiftknob(s)? Perhaps these projects will be 'done' about the same time...?
'Glass or metal, we'll have to keep from curbing 'em like the originals got done...

Yeah, its still hanging in the basement on a waterpipe.

Does anyone have any idea as to who would be a good possibility as to do custom molding for specialty parts? A body shop? A boat shop?
I bet a boat shop could send me in the right direction?

I remember the price I paid for a glass valence a few years ago? I bought one of about 5 or 6 made at a cost of around $75 each? A friend of mine was supposed to end up with the mold when they were done. They came out good ,but the guy was never to be found for another group run and the mold disappeared with him? Maybe he cut himself short and didn't make any $$$? I don't know?

I will check into it this week and let you guys know.

I'd take 2, at the least. What about getting them Carbon Fiber or urethane? I know CF would be pricey but it would look really nice depending on your scheme.

Also I know that a lot of valance, side skirts, and wings are made of/from urethane, this would be a lot lighter than glass and would last a lot longer seeing as how a small bump wouldn't crack it. A friend of mine bought one for his Toyota a while back and it came out nice. He painted it white to match the truck and the body guy knew just how to prep and paint it since the process is a bit different. He also stated that something was either added or done so that the paint acutally had a bit of "flex" or give so that a small bump or something wouldn't crack it.

In any case, I speak to a few peeps out here (Pasadena area) I know taht might be able to pull this off and see what price range we're looking at. I'm not trying to step on toes here, just extend another avenue for sources.

A fiberglass specialist has been found!
He says no job to small.
I am going to take the steel valence by this coming week to see what his estimate for the mold and the individual panels that he makes will be.

Thank You Repuguru!

It may be 'no job too small'--but what quantity is the minimum for the best price? Perhaps we have enough demand in the "larger" REPU community to reach that level...?

urethane?

I like the idea of making the valance out of urethane. It's flexible rubber. Our valances are all banged up afterall and urethane can take the abuse and just pop back!

Change

If the price is below $100 change my request to 2 instead of 1, I know you won't know till the final product is ready but if you can tell. I'll take 2.

Hi guys,
I just found this forum. I have a mazda rotary pickup (1977) that has been on my list to restore for about 15 years. I was fortunate to be able to purchase some NEW body panels before they disappeared from existence. I don't want to part with them, but if you have found folks who can mold off of them without damaging them I might be persuaded to help out. I have a brand new lower valence, two new front fenders and grill that I know of. I'd have to look to see if I've got other parts. It's been so long that I can't remember what I bought. Let me know if I can help!

Just send it to me.....

Oh, er,.. I mean... Welcome to the forum and I think I can speak for a lot of folks here....Thank you. We will probably want and need your help.

Its the front valance we are after mainly (at least in this thread). Most of us have more fenders than we need. But that darn Valance....its the elusive one.

As you may have read, Repuguru has a new one and is in the process of taking it to get an estimate on having it reproduced (in fiberglass, I think). But we would welcome you to take yours in for an estimate as well. As you can see from reading this thread, there is a lot of interest in getting these, and we welcome several sources and of course the best price. Some of us are wanting to get a couple each. So, Protect that valance, and see if you can find someone to make a mold and get some copies made.

Again, Welcome, and enjoy your stay.
