Metal prep and priming materials

Hey guys, this is the stuff that I used on my bed.

http://themonkeyhouse.org/REPU/2003-12-26_PPG_stuff/index.html

The DX579 and DX520 is a two-step process.

Should be applied to bare metal.

The 579 creates a thin layer of surface rust in minutes. You can watch it rust right in front of your eyes, its freaky.

Then you lay the 520 which is mostly phosphoric acid. It converts that layer of rust into a protective layer. Dry thoroughly.

Then I coated it with this PPG two-part epoxy primer:

This stuff is some of the cheaper stuff PPG makes. I think a quart with catalyst was 30-35 bucks.

I couldn't AFFORD the next step up in their systems cause it was more than DOUBLE. I know the guy at the paint store pretty well, and he says the Omni line really is pretty good. And I've seen my friends dad paint his corvette using the omni line and it looks pretty good.

I went straight to an epoxy coat here because I'm just trying to seal the metal up while I do body work. On perfect metal you'd lay down a sanding primer, work it smooth and then seal it with the epoxy and then lay down your colour coat.

Anyway, that's the stuff I used on my bed in case anyone was curious.

I won't presume to tell someone how to spell if I didn't know where they were schooled so you can spell it however you like.

There *IS* a certain amount of tongue-content in the proverbial cheek there BTW. I don't like to provoke a drinking man :)

Re: the prep...

Definitely after SOME means of stripping to bare metal. DA, blasting, etc. If you use a chemical stripper make sure you wash the metal throroughly first. Its best to get scale and paint off any surface you want to treat to be sure you get the best coverage and penetration.
