!!! steering column bushing available !!!
Hey guys, I installed a new steering column bushing in my 74. It's the bushing that goes between the steering column and the tube the column rides in. Prevents the steering wheel from just flopping around. Fixed it. Had to sand down three small protusions on the O.D. of the bush with dremel, sanded down about 1mm. Took 30 seconds with dremel.
I have a source for more of the bushings. Don't know if it'll fit a 77. I'm posting pictures with measurements so you can measure to see if it'll fit your REPU.
Anyone want to do a group buy? $30.00 shipped to upper 48 states, buyer sands down to fit. Again only took 30 seconds with dremel with grinding stone attachment.
O.D. of bushing measured at the O-ring. You can see two protusions on left and right u grind down to fit.

O.D. of bushing measured at body of bushing. 3 protusions easily visible.

That's where it goes.

Bushings
Most of my trucks have the dreaded "steering wheel flopitis" put me down for 3 of em. Get back to me when you are ready to do it. Couldn't get 3 made at a machine shop for 30 apiece and if I bought a lathe the price would be more.

No offense to Brad's efforts...
...and, understood about the 'inefficiencies'/lack of options...
I guess in this single instance I just wish I had retained some connection to the injection-molding plastics place I did a brief stint in about 20-odd years ago!
--How identical is the bushing in Couriers, rx-4's, Cosmo, etc. ...? Might there be a way to bring the price down at some 'bulk' level -- and would there be a demand for them on, say, Ebay?

Thanks ovquick, you're in
$30/each is the group buy price. Don't know what other cars they fit so I put measurements and pics on this thread for the potential buyer to measure before buying. No returns, serious buyers only.
Just trying to help out the rotary community!

I've ordered one of the RX7 bushing ($16.38), which should be here Friday. I'll check the dimensions and try to install it. If it doesn't work, then I'll be interested in one of Brad's bushing. I'll let you all know what happens.

Yeah, the 1st gen RX7 (SA22 chassis) steering bushing work. Just need to file a little bit off and they pop right in. Check out the pics towards the bottom of the 1st page of the link. I am FCHONCHO on the evil forum. I also recently used the 1st gen steering bushing on a friend's RX-2 and it worked like a charm.

BTW: Brad, if you could make these in something more durable/stiff than the OEM plastic you'd be onto something. Maybe TEFLON or DELRIN material? That way the bushing would wear so quickly. Plus I already now for a fact that essentially the same dimensions work for the 1st gen, REPU, and RX2. I'm guessing you could sell the same bushing to the whole old school RX crowd.
Anyhoot, just a thought. Also, good seeing you agoina at the JCCS earlier this month. My wife and mom really liked seeing the old green REPU!

Steering Column Bushing
The bushing that Brad has, fits in the 77 very nicely. I went from "severe flopitis" of the steering wheel, to almost none, after this bushing was trimmed and installed. It is going to make the drive down to Irvine nuch nicer this September. Thanks Brad.
