Radio
It looks like I have an older, non-stock radio in there. I remember hearing they guy I bought it from talking about how shallow the dash was at that point. He thought any new/aftermarket DIN style radio would not fit, unless drastic cutting were done.
However! I did see in the latest catalog from JC Whitney, a remote mount radio, that has a remote control(s)... I couldn't find it on their website, but you can sign up there to get a free catalog

Mini Chassis radio/cd
You have to run a "Mini Chassis" stereo. You can find these out there if you look. Alot of the Mazda's seem to have this problem.

I installed a Kraco tape deck radio in my REPU a couple years ago. I only needed to enlarge the stock rectangle slightly. Yes, it is a dual post style and it barely fits. There was a wire holdown on the back of the radio that was in the way of the windshield defogger so I simply started pounding away at it until it was dimpled enough to fit the corner of the radio (after I had removed the wire hold down).
Oh yeah, I also had to remove a little metal from the bracket (it's removable, so it was easy).

Understand this post is old
I know this post is old, but when I lost my radio, and had to upgrade, I did so by altering the dash board. What I did was take out the ash tray (I am not a smoker so it didn't matter to me) and coutout the dash leaving the heater controls and about a 1/2 inch around the outside. I then cut a piece of material similar to plexi, into the shape of the hole. Then I screwed it into place with small wood screws. I then used this as a mount to hold the new stereo, which is a DIN style radio (Sony detachable face stereo). The stereo has been in there for almost 6 years now with no problems.

No, feel free to respond to anything you see here. Please...
Thats a good idea for installing to radio. I do use my ashtray for change. But, non the less I have though about a revamp off that whole center area. It could be done.

I have a Pic
If you want to see how my dash looks after I changed it, you can go into the gallery and look at Mike's 77 REPU. I have a picture of it there.

Wait!
Just a minute! If any of you have a non-cut, intact center section and are contemplating cutting it... let's trade! I've got three, none of which are stock/intact... would gladly trade my best for an un-chopped version.
Thanks!

Yeah, don't cut a good one up if you don't have to. Trade with Klaus.

way way old thread
quote: would be more than happy with just FM if it meant not having to "saw" on my dash.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Alan
I just pulled a beautifull condition Stock AM/FM Clarion receiver from my 79 Rx7. It is one of the "mini" chassis. If you're still interested speak up.

I have got a CD changer w/ remote in my Pawn Shop. I am thinking of installing this baby and having the best of both world. You see I love the monoral sound of AM radio running thru one dash speaker. I listen to TalkRadio in the mornings and listen to Braves baseball on WSB 750 AM at night. Not always in my truck though.
But when my favorite AM show is over in the mornings thats it. I have to turn on my FM stereo for music.
I'll just leave the stock unit in the dash hooked to the little speaker and I'll have my FM/CD unit hooked to my door speakers.
Call it crazy, but I think it what will work for me.

Not crazy at all!
...Truly, the best of both worlds! A stock 'proper' looking, un-chopped dash center complete w./ AM radio is not only great for YOU, but great in terms of being a 'restoration' item, as well as a natural theft deterrant for your (hidden) CD changer system... an excellent choice all the way around! Exactly how I'd do it...once I get my hands on a clean center w./ radio...
