DASH
DOes anyone have an extra dash pad (cracked up is just fine) that they are willing to donate to the cause of developing a fibreglass shell-cover for them?
I'll pay for shipping, and even return it to you later if you like.
Mine is absolutely pristine and crack-free (thank the gods) but I've never seen another one without cracks. I was wondering if I can't develop a nice FG shell for them.
Would anyone be interested? Nothing outrageous just smooth and nice looking. If I can get a decent one together I might be able to offer them in 'ready-to-finish' condition (ie paint).
If I can do a decent job on these I'm willing to try my hand at a valence panel for everyone.
Thanks guys, and remember, I only want ot borrow it, and I'll pay shipping. And it can be cracked up, that doesn't matter.

I just recovered mine for 25 bucks
filled in the cracks with rubber cement. sprayed it with adhesive, layed a 1/8" thick foam sheet over it and sprayed that with adhesive. layed some black vynal/naugahide over that and it looks friggin great! much better then spending $250 for it to be redone professionally!

You beat me to it; just as well...
...shipping to and from FLA should be about the same from OR vs. CA... and your's might already be pulled out as well, eh Craig? Great idea, Martin--go for it!

Excellent. I won't know for sure until I get my hands on it but its got pretty simple lines. I'm hopeful for a good result.

Shell or replacement part
I've been looking at things and wandering if its going to be easier to do a shell/cover or just fabricate a whole new dashpad altogether.
Which would you guys prefer if given the choice?

Whatever gives...
..the best 'bang for the buck', given that it'll have to endure the same harsh conditions as the original, and look good doing so...

What would you project the cost of something like this to be? My very cracked dash pad has been sitting in a box for the last year waiting for me to attempt to recover it, but if you can fab something that looks good at a reasonable price I might just do that instead.

I haven't really thought about it too much yet. Since I wanted one (or two) myself I was going to just make a mould and see how they turned out. If I'm happy enough to use it for myself, I'll post pics and be happy to make more for other people. As with everything there's probably several factors involved in pricing:
Even with a mould to work from I could see each one taking several hours to complete. It also depends on how good they look. I wouldn't expect anyone to pay for a POS, not would I want to have my name attached to such a thing.
Likely its would be much like Klaus and his shifter-knobs, its got to cover expenses, and be worthwhile. Volume production would definitely make it cheaper. I can't see them being less than $50 and would like to keep it well under $100.
The idea here being to reproduce a dashpad that can not be easily dinstinguished from OEM, except that it would be harder (fiberglass) than the foam ones. The upshot is that it should be MUCH more durable, esp with the right finish coat.
I should have the pad sometime next week, and will give everyone a better assessment of what I think I can do with my limited talents after the memorial day weekend. I won't know much more until then.

Since we're on this subject:
How about some input on finishes you'd like?
A smooth gelcoated finish is the cheapest/easiest finish for me to do most likely.
This would be a ready-to-paint finish, which you could paint yourself, or have shot by someone else. Its small piece so it shouldn't cost much to have done by someone else.
Likewise I can probably shoot them for you but the colour selection will be pretty Henry Ford-ish. I'll definitely be doing black, and POSSIBLY the Phoenix Blue.
For the right money I'll paint zebra stripes on it :)
But to keep things as cheap as possible unpainted or one of maybe two or three colours will likely be the way to go.
How important is the 'leather-grain' finish to most of you guys? I'm going to attempt it, but its going to take some work and development to accomplish a decent looking one. Craig wants one like this, and I don't blame him. To keep it absolutely OEM-looking its a neccessity. So if I can do it those will be available but probably cost a little more than a smooth gelcoat finish.
Please send me any and all ideas, you have. The more the better, I'd like to consider anything you guys have in mind.

Gelcoat sounds great...
... for the texture, only thing comes to mind is the texturing (paper?) commonly used for (plastic?) liquid leather/vinyl repair kits... dunno, just a thought...
