I'd pay what it's worth.

If you were to price all the parts, then reduce it by a certain percentage, it will put you within the correct range.

I've got to say I haven't had quite this much fun watching ppl dance around a subject in quite some time.

Apparently long dead is the easy transaction.

"I need one."

"I got one, $n.nn."

"Great, I'll take it. / You're nuts, but good luck."

Sigh.

/me scratches head for a second and wonders about stuff.

The only one I have is in my MG Midget, and it needs rotor housings and an intermediate plate from the correct year. I have a dead '74-'75 plate, and I may have access to a used one of unknown condition soon. I guess I could build a correct '74-'75 engine if I really wanted to. Hmm...

Maybe I shouldn't have told you to price the parts earlier. A lot of those '74-'75 parts are no longer available. There are other options though.

I suppose I *might*...

...part with a 'correct' 'core'... but we're not talking about rebuilt, running engines at that point... and the 'value' would definitely need to be determined... (Then there's the minor detail of what's actually '74 rx-4, as opposed to 'correct' REPU...)
My personal ballpark numbers: A decent-running, well-used old 4port is worth $500, if it doesn't burn 'too much' oil. A non-running core, well... I'll give 50 bucks for one, maybe more... just to gamble on what parts *might* be worth having/be reusable.
A more recently rebuilt/low miles, solid runner is another matter entirely... and as such, worth quite a bit more.

If I had that,

...it wouldn't be for sale, it'd be in a truck. If I were to guess at it's market 'value', I'd have to say I'd expect to need $1,000 (or more), and a good measure of luck to find one in 'that good' condition, for sale at all...
Of course, things may look different in your location...

Not that it's very relevant, but...

...I think the last 'relatively fresh' rebuild of one of these 'proper', early engines I recall was in Bob Maybell's blue '75 REPU, which ebayed over a year ago... It might've been a relative bargain, at that!
Seems to me, you might need to be willing to risk it with a whole truck, or collect the bits and build one, or have one built for you...
What you're after might just be as rare as factory valances, by now.

I finally got a correct 3B intermediate plate for my '74 engine. Now I just need some decent rotor housings.

Those are the toughest to find!

3B steels I have a-plenty... 'correct' oldschool housings worth attempting to re-use: yeah, right!
