VIN?'s

Hello all,

In an attempt to register my REPU I bought through the forum from a gentleman in GA I have hit a snag. The PO never had the vehicle titled because when he went to register it from the PO the state of georgia DMV said vehicles of it's age did not need a title. He did have the title from the PO whom lived in SC,and he sent it up to me with the truck. The Massachusetts registry will not accept the title because it just proves that the guy in SC sold it to the guy i bought it from. They are asking for a GA title that has never existed or a copy of the PO registration proving he registered in and paid sales tax in the state of GA.They also gave me a form to be filled out by a police officer proving the VIN is in tact which i just had a officer look at it.The thing is the title from SC i have list the VIN as pa136 and then 5 digits after that. The VIN on the truck lists PA136 and then 6 digits after that.Which is right? The last digit on the plate under the hood looks sort of different than the others could it have been placed there afterwards?Sorry if I am confusing you guys.

Chris

[vin?\'s]

Hi,
I'm not from the States so, eh, what's (and how it looks like on paper):
PO, Title, DMV, etc.

"The PO never had the vehicle titled because when he went to register it from the PO the state of georgia"
"DMV said vehicles of it's age did not need a title"

"VIN is in tact"

"Sorry if I am confusing you guys."
Confusing, yes, that I am...

As far as I know, PA136 is the model number. The other numbers are the production number of the vehicle. They're all needed to form a VIN. I barely know WA DOL stuff, sorry.

Oops, forgot to say that the VIN plate under my hood is all nasty from water damage. Maybe I can find it on the door plate a little later and tell you how many digits it's supposed to have.

PA136 plus six digits...

...most likely beginning with '10' or '11' if it's a '74...

They all have 6 digits after the Spa136 or Pa136 or PA236......

And as far as I know, and I do have seven trucks, they all start with 10xxxx,or in the case of the 75's, SPA13612xxxx.

Second, there are three known serial number marks on the truck. One is under the hood, forward of the passenger seat on the firewall shelf. The second is on the drivers door post plate, and the third is the sneaky one on the frame in the drivers side wheel well, forward of the wheel. Find the numbers, and whatever the frame says is probably the truth as the plates can be easily changed. Or better yet, assume it is the one that matches the frame.

I personally would go from DMV place to DMV place until I found a reasonable and normal person. I have found several here in Washington that I will never set foot in again because in a nutshell, they are anal assholes. They get picky about B/S, and I go to another place and I register just fine. Try another place. It usually works.

I have a 75 truck registered as a PA136, that is, it is registered as a 74. I never bothered to change it because quite frankly, I don't care.

Anyway, try another place, and if that doesn't work, look up both of the PO's (Previous Owners, to you across the puddle) and get a note from them stating that they payed the tax. (or tell them that it was "gifted" to you.)

Best of luck.

Should it be 11 digits starting with PA13610xxxx like the truck has,or 10 like the SC title listed PA13610xxx?

Nwaco: I do have one that's a '74 that starts with '11'...

Klaus, my man, Well then now we've got 10's, 11's, and 12's.....

Can anyone confirm any other numbers? Let's just finish up these little tidbits of info that go into the knowledge base for future reference. Considering there were only four years woth of data, it was probably hardly enough to document from a manufacters point of view anyway.

By the way, has anyone else ever tried to get build data on a truck? I have several times and got real polite answers and offers of help from the customer service web desk, but absolutely no follow through after that, even after repeated attempts at reminding them.

Oh well, pretty soon, I tell ya, Even Mazda will have to come to us for info on our trucks.

title

Yes, go to a different DMV station. I'd register your SC title and never mention the fact of its Georgia origin.
If I understand right the whole reason they want the Vin number inspected is the difference between the GA info and the SC info?
Just hand them the SC info, get it regitered with the 5 digit number, and in a couple of years just "happen" to notice that the Mass title must have had a "typo" that omitted a number. By that time your SC title will off record.

My state, Nebraska, always does a VIN check whenever you title and register a vehicle that was purchased out of state. They do it to make sure the vehicle isn't stolen.

Whether or not the person you bought it from paid tax shouldn't be your problem. Why would Massachusetts care if Georgia got their tax money?

so what you have is a SC title signed over on the back to the guy in GA?

I had the exact same thing when i bought my truck. I had a title from owner "A" signed over on back to owner "B" and a notorized bill of sale from owner "B" to me. My DMV just looked at everything and issued me a title. Maybe the notorized bill of sale is what helped?
