installed and took it on a test drive today

The good:
Torsen really puts the power down.
Noticeable increase in acceleration.
Truck really turns into corners. Not oversteer, it just rotates into the turn nicely and controlled.
The truck actually handles better with this torsen.
I can see why guys would want this diff on the auto-x.

The Bad
Diff Shop helper set it up. Did poor job on tooth contact setup. Lots of gear whine on accel and decel.

Bad noises on part to no throttle.

The Ugly

Had to pull it out, tooth pattern set to drive side: shallow and heel. coast side: WAAAAAYYY too much contact period.

It's going back to the diff shop this week for a re-do.

Teaser pics here:
http://rides.webshots.com/album/558001512xWPyMy

Looks like a poor installation issue, not a machined parts issue.

well, took it back to the rear end shop today

me: "it's setup with way too shallow a pattern"

owner admitted they didn't check the pattern! "we just put it back together, didn't change the shims".

speechless. remain calm.

me: "i would have checked the pattern myself but the chunk was already bolted and sealed in the axel housing".

blank look then "it's almost impossible to check the pattern with that red grease you put on there."

well, the racecar shop that did my last diff used the exact same mobil1 grease to check the pattern. it didn't make bad noises.

"i'll have my guy look at it, call me in a few days"

i'll have to remind them on the phone to check the pinion and carrier bearing preload + backlash.

it's so hard to find good help these days.

at least the braided brake lines i installed at the same time worked great - nice pedal pressure and feel.

Brad, thanks for the update. Bummer about the lousy help. Seems like you'll get it going soon though!

BTW: Which pics are of the piece that was machined, any? I didn't noice any machined spacers in the pics.

spacers

pic 24 shows the spacer between the ring gear and torsen. it's shiny and you can see the flash on it. the ring gear is darker. thr torsen is lighter. necessary for it all to line up.

pic 31 is the little spacer that goes inside the torsen, between the axel shafts for them to bump up against. replaces the thrust block.

Oh, okay... I see it now. I figured pic 31 was something you had made, just not sure what. I also notice the shim in 24 now that you describe it too.

So you going to be selling some of these pretty soon or what? ;)

I'd buy that for a dollar!

after it passes QA

Then yes the spacers will be sold to the public. I'll prolly just post the machinist's contact info and you guys can go thru him directly. He bought enough material to make 5 and can source more too.

Should you fail to get proper service...

...from that driveline shop, I'd like to suggest that you print out a few pages of this thread, (including the number of views...), and show the owner just how much bad publicity he bought for himself, at your expense!

Then I'd go straight back to that other shop that gave you good service. What was their name?

Alternatively, of course we're all keeping our fingers crossed he makes it up to you by doing it *right* the second time...

Hoping for the best--.

done again, ready for pickup

i'll pick it up this saturday.

he checked the pattern this time, said it looks good. i'll eyeball it when i get there. they also gave me some pointers on setting end play of axels. the factory instructions won't work (set one, then the other) because the factory thrust block is held in place by the open diff and with the torsen we're using floating thrust block.

they said to set the end play to .003" to .008"

bought a dial indicator and magnetic adjustable base from harbor freight cheap a$$ tools last night. gotta check it myself.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=33675

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=5645

shop said they set the end play to zero but i could move the axels by pulling on them. he was suprised to hear that. i think that was the rattling racket i heard on part to no throttle. just remove shims to set it tighter. this is gonna be a fun new project; get to learn something new is the best way to look at it.

they said negligable wear on the gears - whew. 'they look fine, they're a used gear set'. yes.

got it back

drive pattern looks great now. coast isn't perfect but with used gears you get it as close as possible.

removing the entire rear axel made it much easier to install the diff. it's all together on my garage floor and what is the procedure to measure end play? anyone?

i've tapped the axel shaft hub with wood block and mallet, dial indicator moves. very very quickly. but can't just pull on it and get a good reading; it moves very little by hand like .001"

anyone?

+ work has me busy for the next 9 days, won't have much time to REPU.

I'll *guess*...

...that there's a 'book' method to measure end play to spec., and it *might* involve...:

1.) Use of a set amount of 'preload'/pull on the axle shaft, perhaps accomplished via a scale/spring type device, or a weight... (?)

2.) Measurement via feeler guage(s). (?)

I'd take anything Harbor Freight with a big, variable 'grain of salt' -- especially when it comes to *precision*!

works

Cleaned it out, put it all back together and drove around last night. No whine, rattle, or clunk; all quiet back there. Handles much better too; really turns into the corner. No understeer on corner exit.

Gonna put more miles on it including freeway speeds then drain fluid.

Brad

Since you PMed me on the 'evil forum', I thought I would follow up with a couple questions here to consolidate some of the info. 1st, what vehicle, model and year does this thorsen unit come from? 2nd, what are the projected average cost of the unit, the adapter parts, machine work and labor to set it up. 3rd, what gear ratios are availible? Lastly, what is the projected hp and abuse the unit will be able to take? Assuming this may be sinstalled behind a 300+ hp TII engine, will it take it?

Thanks, Scott.

No prob Scott, here we go:

torsen from 3rd gen rx7, auto or stick

torsen's price vary, i got mine for 150. 3rd gen people who swap out the rotormotor to vette motor go with a different diff and are ready to sell the torsen for that price; i just asked around. other people think they're gold and want 800, just look around. i've found some on ebay on the cheap too. keep in mind torsen is latest technology. the torque sensing limited slip is regarded as one of the best things to happen to the modern automobile since the rotary engine ;)

spacers and bolts (aka 'the kit' my machinist will be selling) are approximately 200 shipped price not set yet.

labor to swap out open for torsen and set up diff: typically 350. axel housing itself needs grinding for clearance: 75 tops or get out your angle grinder for free. if you want new pinion, carrier, or axel bearings or seals(now would be a prime opportunity since it's all apart) add $ accordingly.

repu or courier gear ratios only. repu: 4.675, 4.375, 4.111, 3.90 + whatever courier had

the first guy who did this mod puts 450hp to the ground and autocrosses it HARD, regularly beat a viper in OSP class.

Hey Brad,
Bring all your info on the Torsen swap on the SoCal repu run. I really want to upgrade my rear differential soon.

torsens never came in fc's

fc's came with clutch pack or viscous fluid type. torsen was only diff in fd's.

i'd just ask him what year fd to be absolutely sure. good price too.
