Me too on the carby questions

I just got a 13b intake circa 74. It has the acv port below the two center ports. The question is will a Nikki carb fit this? How do these compare to stock 12a intakes? I found a 4 port and want to put a modded Nikki on this intake. If no go, I need a 12a to 13b four port adaptor plate. Any help appreciated.

Put them side-by-side...

...to appreciate the differences. If you must run the Nikki on your 13B, then you can machine 'whatever' to fit.

Why not stick with what's appropriate?

Klaus, thanks for the reply. Let me be more specific. If I hang onto the Nikki and all its smog stuff, I can drive it and pass for 3 years till I meet the 25 year rule in Washington state. I don't think the Hitachi will pass and I know a Dellorto won't.

This will be in an 83 RX. I am looking for a nice warm daily driver, nothing radical. Well, I would love something radical but am practical for now!

The used to be 12A to 13b 4 port adaptor plates. This would be ideal but they are no longer made. So its original intake or mill and adaptor plate, which might be fun anyway. You could just take pity on me and send a Haltech unit and a tweakit throttle body for my birthday. Sound like a good idea?

Sounds Great!

...now if someone'll send me two of those for Christmas, I'd be more than happy to 'share the wealth' and send you one of 'em for your B'day...

Ah, yes... now that you've shared more info, I understand better. You are in a bit of a bind, trying to smog your non-stock '83 seven...

Not sure what else I could offer, since you likely already know more than I do about what's required.

(Or, you could accquire a nice, warm 'whatever' cheapo beater car for the winter, and yank that 13B outta the '83, and install it in a REPU, (where it belongs!)... voila, no more waiting to pass the '25-year' rule! I'd even sell you the REPU chassis, if you are motivated...) :)

Hey Dump, I've got a '74 13B manifold that's been drilled for the Nikki stud pattern. I'm messing with a Nikki for the first time and will try it out on the 13B since I don't have a running 12A. If it works ok, I'll let you know.

I'm new to Nikkis so modding it is going slowly. I've already done the mechanical secondary mod.

Jeff, You told me about that and I have been waiting to hear how it works. It looks like I may have to fab my 12A-13b 4 port adaptor plate to simplify things. I am hoping to jet down a Sterling carb to pass smog then jet back up for fun. I think an adaptor at the lower end will be better than funking up a stock 13 intake someone can use.

Klaus, What year on the truck body? I am 6'4" and the 76 trucks fit me the best, which means barely enough. I drove a repu last year for the first time. Funner than snot!

All my REPU's...

... are 1974.

(You meant '77's fit you best, right?)

Yes, '77 are very roomy. With the couch all the way back and a small steering wheel in my '74, it's almost one click too far back for me. I have to leave the seat all the way back though because it's got a Cosmo 5 speed and shifter which touches the seat in 2nd and a little in 4th.

I'm lucky that this manifold was already drilled. I'd never attempt something like this on my own (I don't see much point in running a smaller 12A carb on a 13B, but this is before the Yaw and Sterling carbs came out).

Jeff, drilling and tapping aluminum is easy. Let me know how it turns out.

Well, 77 it is with the truck then. Someday, someday.....

My sight glass is leaking. Is there a good compound or sealant that would work inside the bowl to seal this up?

I'm just wondering why nobody likes the Hitachi carbs; is it because you all are running modified engines and want a carb that can be modified? I'm still farting around with my Hitachi, keeping it stock since California only exempts through 75. Now I guess I have to pass smog forever. For any practical purpose, would I ever need to consider replacing the Hitachi with something else and what is out there that would pass smog? My 77 has several smog fittings not found on earlier Hitachis.

Leaks are one good reason..

...to replace; no idea on best sealant without obliterating the 'view'... mine leaks, too; I think they about all do.
Other reasons: CFM limiations; lack of availability of rebuild/maintenance/replacement parts; bang per buck of alternate setups...

I've been told we 'could' get the secondary vacuum diaphragm's re-manufactured... but the expense only makes sense when doing a good number of 'em at once... How much do you love your Hitachi?

RE: Passing smog--SOunds like you might need to trade back to a '74, then!

I guess I gotta love it if its the only thing between me and my smog certificate. Had a 74 but let it go, no room for a headrest. Could be more fun to extend a cab rather than fix a Hitachi.

I was thinking...

...that a vintage '70's smoke-tint lexan 'bubble' back window would be the most period-appropriate (and aerodynamic?) way of getting a bit more helmet room... Haven't checked JC Whitney if anything like it might still be available.
