FC leading ignition coil?
Has anyboy used a 2nd generation rx7 leading dual ignition coil in their repu DLIDFIS? I have spent the last couple days trying to get it to work in an effort to reduce some wiring and eliminate the extra coil. I ran into problems of the ignition randomly breaking up at any rpm. Are the J109 ignitors not compatible with the FC coil? Or maybe my coil is just bad... I do have the ignitor that goes with the coil but that is going to be another pain to get wired up and I thought I should ask before jumping into it.
thanks

Coils rarely go bad...
...but, our ancient wiring sure might. Are you positive it's not some little bit of crap intermittently clogging fuel flow somewhere?

I redid almost all the wiring and still it ran quite poorly. I tried timing it but it kept missing whenever I would get the rpm's up over about 1500. I swapped back in the 1st gen rx7 coil I was using and it works perfect. I think the coil really did go bad. I am going to try another next time I can get back to the wrecking yard.
On another timing problem, I am not able to get timing anywhere between 0 and 30. The alternator bracket is in the way. I can turn the distributor one tooth back and forth and either 0 is fully advanced or 30 is fully retarded. I think I am going to have to cut a piece out of the bracket, has anybody else had this problem?

Yes
I'm running a 12A 83 dist and have the same problem, I was thinking about taking the plate off and make it adjustable. Let me know what you come up with if it works out. Charles

I got around the alt bracket problem by swapping the alt and the bracket to 1st gen parts. The older alts are slightly larger and the early brackets are curved a little differently. You can grind a little from the bracket if you want.
As for the 2nd gen coil mod, it's refered to as 2GCDFIS. To hook it up, you can use a J-109 ignitor as long as you retain the ballast resistor in the base of the coil assembly. Without the resistor, the ignitor will burn out. I drew a little exploded-view diagram for the club forum. Maybe I can find it... http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3481629&postcount=102
Here is the whole thread. It would definitely be a good idea to read all the way through it. http://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=243350
Good luck getting it to run on your truck. I still have yet to try 2GCDFIS or even MSD-DIS because DLIDFIS is working very well so far.
Hey, have you installed a relay yet? I run a 10AWG wire from the starter solenoid up to the inner fender where the coils are sitting. The original ignition wires are Y together and they switch a relay on. Then the power wire from the solenoid connects through the relay to the ignitors and coils. They get more 'juice' than my fuel pump. :)

Or...
...you may find that by simply bolting the bracket up to an alternate (nearby) location, your problem is solved... (if not, modify!) Mine is 'just barely' functional in such a manner... toughest part is, getting the cap to unsnap when it's in that 'tight fit' position...
Then again, come to think of it, how can I be 100% certain I'm even running the original bracket...?

I filed some of the plastic on the bottom edge the dizzy cap on the white truck when it still had the large alt. Then I removed the bracket and took it to a bench grinder when I put a new cap on. Then I got a 1st gen alt and now there is a large gap there. :) Or maybe I swapped in a 2st gen bracket? I've played musical parts a lot over the years so maybe the bracket is on a different engine. I can just barely recall a picture in my mind of the time when I had the filed-down cap together with the grinded-upon bracket. There was a lot of room right there.
