This darn bb screwed up my post :(

I'll try to rewrite this but I hope I can try to at least come close to all the nuances and stuff this it originaly had.. you know what I mean.

The '77 REPU had a 5 speed, so you could look for one of those. I heard that the RX-3SP has the best gear ratios, but they are rare to find.

The differences of 4 and 5 speeds are the tranny mount bolt holes being further back in the 5 speeds (probably similar to the SA 5 speed trannys?).

I installed an SA 5 speed in my 4 speed REPU and had to oval all the holes. I'm not sure how much further back the holes are, but it is not a true bolt-in without modding the holes.

I helped my friend remove a '77 5 speed from his '74 REPU today and saw that the crossmember had a bracket welded to it which keeps the holes round but kinda screws up the tranny mount to crossmember junction. Oh well, its not mine hehe.

For your '80 SA, I'd reccomend learning all you can about 4 vs 5 speed trannies and all the differences that Mazda made in an attempt to uh, for whatever reason, keep their lineup ever changing. Look out for remote shifter (FB) trannies. You may get lucky and find something that will handle the power.

Forget about getting any '86 or later tranny unless you actually want to get even more involved in your project than your marriage. Ha!
