Transmission info
Hello, just curious if anyone out there is fairly familiar with the stock and/or other transmissions in our REPUs. Long story short: yesterday I took my '75 out to the local drag strip to see what kind of times it would pull and I managed to rip the rubber tranny mount right under where the shifter is. Now I'm pretty sure my truck has a later model RX-7 tranny in it (79-80 I think) so I'm not sure if this would installed differently than a stock REPU tranny. Everything still looks very solid and in place, only problem is the rubber between the part that bolts to the tranny and bracket ripped as I launched. The shifter moved over about 5-6" while I was getting on the gas, which to say the least kind of freaked me out. It still moves a little even in casual street driving, so I'm wondering what's the best way to fix this. I could replace that rubber mount, but honestly that doesn't seem very sturdy and what's to stop that from ripping again next time I decide to get on the gas? I was thinking perhaps of drilling a couple holes through that mount and putting some sort of heavy duty bolts through it. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

A torque brace. I need to add one to my truck because it would torque over hard enough to hit the oil pan against the frame. I'm sure yours did that and then kept going.

A brace sounds superior...
... to the 'torque chain' I recall seeing in use on a pal's V-8 hotrod, 'back when'...

Racing Beat sells a tranny torque brace for the Rx7 that might be able to be adapted for a REPU (probably would still take some good work) I know that the mounting plate bolts right up to the bell housing and it works well on my first and second gen 7s

You could weld a small perch at the corner of the engine bay for the torque brace to attatch to.

Just an update on my rubber tranny mount problem: I got another RX-4/REPU mount but couldn't manage to get it on without the proper tools since the tranny shifted over about an inch or so when I took the old one off. The upper mounting holes in the old one had also been redrilled to about 1/2" from the edge -- too close for comfort but it wouldn't fit in the stock hole location without doing this again on the replacement. Anyway, I took it to a transmission shop and they got the holes to line up with a little convincing but I still don't like how it has to mount so close to the edge.
My question is, what rubber mount do you use on a REPU with a 5 spd. 1st gen. RX-7 tranny? There seems to be about a 1/2" difference in length. It doesn't appear that redrilling the crossmember is an option either. Is there a rubber mount out there for some old rotary car that is offset? If anyone has an info on this I'd appreciate it, as I'd like to eventually get a more stable mount put in.
Thanks,
Mike

Use the 79-80 trans and the 79-80 trans mount. Fab a plate to connect the trans mount to the trans crossmember.
