Leg Room

Has anyone hear of, seen or thought about extending
the rear of the cab to get more leg room on a
mazda/courier pick-up?

the 77 body style Repu had the larger cab.. I had thought about doin something like that but I don't think it would help too much.. maybe if you push the floor boards and firwall forward instead you might get some space..

i have a '77 with the larger cab. I'm 5'9 and my bench is all the way back and i can floor all the pedals easily so i can understand how you tall guys complain about lack of leg room.

When i had the bench seat out, i had a 1st gen rx7 seat rigged in and it sat further back and much lower. I could barely see over the dash. i'd venture that with bucket seats you could gain a few inches even in the shorter cabs.

That might take some doing.

The norm, at least for what I've seen, is the opposite result: buckets put one too close to the wheel for comfort. Would seem special seat mounts might help, but there's still the issue of seat back thickness vs. the super-thin back of the original bench, which tucks in below the back window... unlike most buckets.

Being under-tall myself, I found that the 74 had a problem the other direction as well. In order to get a comfortable leg position/pedal stroke in mine, I added a 1 inch rubber pad to the clutch pedal. This allowed me to be comfortable on the gas pedal while easing the full stroke to the clutch. My 94 RX7 had the same relationship issue, but I don't recall any other Mazdas I owned giving me trouble. Just one of those little things...

I'm 5'7" and I've got my bench seat forward by one click. I think driving it would be more comfortable with a tallboy shifter mod on my '79 smoothcase tranny with its slanty shifter, to make it more friendly with the bench seat because the nylon shifter knob hits it in 2nd and 4th. I could also use a smaller diameter steering wheel like other REPUs I've driven. I've got a used aftermarket wheel that needs some cleaning. I could also construct the shifter extender out of aluminum or angle iron or something.

Are you talking about cutting in metal to extend the cab? And if so by how much? If you're talking about a modern-type extended cab with room for a jumper seat or something it'd be a bitch and a half unless you are or you know a good bodyman. You could cut in the sheetmetal and supports easy enough but getting it to curve the right way would take a lot of hammer and dolly work. Not to mention filler.

You'd be better off cutting a strip out of the roof of a courier or something, but the sides would be terrbile to extend by more than 3-4 inches.

THEN you have to think about the bed! :0

You could probably grind off hte mounts and move them back maybe using 4 instead of 6 but wow...

You're a better man than me if you can do all that.

Its all I can do to find one weekend out of six to go out and sand on my bed for a few hours :p

Gotta do something...

My 'least'worn out bench seat I'm running tweaks my back due to being lopsided (lower) towards the driver's door... But I'll never cut/modify the '74's cab to do it. Most I'd do to a "full-mod" REPU cab is find a way to mount a 5-point harness... Now, which bucket option from what manufacturer is "THE" one that can be made to work best for us taller folk? (No matter the seat mount mods required)

I've seen several Chevy Luvs with the cab aftermarket streched back into the bed. Took some work but is certainly doable.

leg room

I have a high-back bench seat in my truck and that is
why I would like to move the seat back. So I thought I would cut off the rear section (behind the door) of a donor mazda/courier, cut the back panel out of my existing cab, and attach the donor section. Depending on the year of the donor truck, I should getting from 4-7 inches added to back of cab. And then modify the front of the bed the same 4-7 inches.

EZ Right?

You might say my truck is a little high, for reference the door handle is 51" off of the ground.

1975 courier, 350 cu in, 700r4 aod, dana 20, 4x4, 9 inch ford, dana 30, power steering, tilt wheel, 2 gas tanks, dual exhaust, full-size 1/2ton disc/drum brakes, body lift, and I am working on air conditioning.

All the things you could ever want. Or may be I ever wanted.

Leg room

I found a donor truck and the work is in progress.
The new donor cab is welded to the existing cad and it added 5 1/4" to my truck. I now can move the seat to a comfortable position and I still have 2 inch from the rear window to my highback seats. I love it!

Would anyone like to see a extended cab Courier?

Extend-a-cab update. I posted a picture of my cab in the misc section of the photo gallery.
Or should I say, I tried to.
My welding skills or alot better than my computer skills!
