battery box ground

i'm restoring my battery box. battery ground cable goes to battery box. battery box bolted to repu frame. should i paint the battery box brackets so it won't rust? if I do, wouldn't it prohibit the battery box from grounding to the frame since there wouldnt be any metal to metal contact?

or i could grind the paint off the brackets, bolt it up, then spray bracket edges with rubber undercoating to seal from moisture and protect.

input please!

thanks,

True ground is metal to metal....

with NOTHING in between. Unfornunately, it also means CORROSION. With that said, you must understand that once achieving good ground you must protect it by sealing it off as you have said. The best way to do that is to perform your painting to the battery box, burnish off the ground point, remembering that the bonded point is most likely below the paint surface and you may need to use a "plain steel washer" to fill the divet, and then "seal" completely around the bonding point to ensure no moisture pendetration to the grounding points. Use a good marine grade polysulfide or polyerethane sealant to encapsulate the ground point.

By the way, Hello.. all. I have been missing in action for a few months as my beloved employer abruptly sent me on a mission as a consultant to the Government for some of their aircraft used in the Mid-east in the war against Iraq. Boy,.. do we have a lot of aircraft in the east as the Civil Aviation Airlift fleet. The Gov gives the airline a bunch of cash to be the lifting arm of the US during a crisis. That way they don't have to keep a bunch of transports on hand. If you want to know where all the planes are, head east. Nice to be back in good ol US-o-A. I truly did "kiss" the ground upon arrival.

I missed you guys.....

Well, "kiss" the metal-to-metal!

Welcome back, nwaco! Glad you made it back intact, and most interesting that our uncle Sam is outsourcing so much... always curious how that deficit got so huge, so fast! Indeed, we are privileged in our ways...

my '77 battery ground is directly to the frame. I just assumed that was how it came from the factory
