Electronic dizzy swap

Have just acquired an 84 dizzy (GSL-SE, I think) and would like to upgrade the truck. Is there a step by step write up on this anywhere? Did a search..nada.

Thanks!

I'm ready to do the same swap. I also have the coils and ignitors. Mazdatrix has a plan which they sell for $5: maybe the best way to go.

RX7club.com

Its not a hard swap, do a search or look in the 1st gen archives. It should be there. If not let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.

I thought I emailed you a pic, Mike...?

(I know, it was dirty and may not have been detailed enough... let me know!)

Just beware (what year was that?) the 1st-gen one with the remote-mount bits prone to cross-triggering. I do remember that one year's was the one to avoid...

Also, you'll likely need to modify your alternator bracket a bit... and/or change the bolt location.

Jeff20B'2 website. He has an indepth explanation of the theory and install. Also has wiring scematic. I used it for my dizzy swap. I wish I new about this years ago. Here is the link. http://www.geocities.com/cd23c/dlidfis.html
Good luck. You'll love the results.

Ah yes!

Going to electronic ignition is the best upgrade to an old rotary since the RB header.

I've got the dist and ignitors, and I was planning to just install standard FB 1st gen coils (or even 2nd gen coils which some say are better), but if the Diamond coils are better I'll get them, if I have some idea of the Diamond model number or how to find it.

If this works well on the REPU I'll do the same on the 83GS, and then think about the other cars. Hard to believe that such a simple change will have such a big effect, but I'm willing to try.

Thanks guys for the help, but I'm still not sure what I am doing. I went to http://www.geocities.com/cd23c/dlidfis.html,
isn't that a bit more than just swapping in the 1st gen stuff and removing the old? It asks for three ignitors..I have a dizzy with two attached.
I've removed the resistors and put in two new coils (accel) designed for a 1984 RX7. Just not sure where all the wires go, or what to discard. Anyone have a step-by-step just with these trucks in mind?

The extreme HACK job I inherited with splices and mixed wire colors all over the place isn't helping, either.

*Klause, your picture was a great start/help. I just need more details, like which plug have you tapped into in the photo?

Or, do I need to do like the site says for it to work?

Sorry I'm such a newbie.....but I guess I am.

Mike

Do you have a 1st gen RX7, that you can look at how its wired. Its really simple, all you need is the harness going from the coils to the igniters(or you can make your own), and power and tach lead to the coils. I`ll try to get you a pic of mine tomorrow in the light if its not bitterly cold out. Send me your email address again so I can send it directly to you. I have my 79 RX7 and the 2 trucks converted to electronic ignition. It makes a world of difference.

Wow, that would be great, thanks!

I've atually had three 1st gens, none at present however. I bought the distributor a year ago from the 1st gen section of the RX7 club. Didn't get the harness.
So, I assume I can toss the ignition relay as well?

Thanks again for the help, email paynemw@charter.net

Let me know...

Sounds like Charles has got you covered; if you still need further info/a different close-up pic, let me know!

(I'd have to go out and take detailed notes myself, prior to commenting further on 'which plug': It's something I have to look at and think about every time...)

Does the relay control anything else?

Not sure about the relay. The wires go from the coil terminals to the relay. I assume no relay in the updated stuff, but I ain't a cuttin' anything until I get details and am sure of want I'm a' doin' :)

Yes, too cold to go out and take pics..whenever, no worries.

Meantime, I'll get out my 1st gen wiring diagrams and see what I can figure out for myself.

Check out the photo gallery. I believe there is a scan of a 74 wiring diagram. I be of use for figuring it out. Good luck.

Yes, I've got that diagram. But, if it's for a '74 with the points distributor wiring intact, not much help as I want to remove it for the newer stuff.
I'm trying to find the wiring diagram for my 84 GSL-SE I had, that should show me everything (In theory).

Still would appreciate any help/pics, but the weather is NOT getting any better to go out and do that.

Ok, I'm going for it..

But a couple of questions on installing the 'new' distributor.
1. I set the engine pully to the single notch on the pully, right? There's a double notch right next to it.
2. Which way does the igniters face once installed? RX7 club has given me info that trailing igniter could face driver seat, or radiator. Not sure here.
3. The new dizzy has a double diaphragm, the old=one. Do I leave these unhooked, or tee them together to the vac line?

That's it for now, I guarantee there willbe more, thanks!

The write up in the 1st gensection, link is in the FAQS, iirc, covers the swap fairly well. The ballast resistors need to be bypassed. This can be done by removing the spring in them and jumpering the connections, or removing them completely. As far as the connectors for the ignitors, find an 81+ 1st gen at the wreckers and take the wire conectors with as much of a pigtail that you can get.

For the vacuum pots on the dizzy, you can tee then together and run a single vacuum hose to the baseplate on the carb.

If the REPU trailing ignition is part time like the 79 RX7s, then you will need to follow the mods listed in the writeup. You only need 2 12 volt coils if you are converting to the stock style igniton found on the FBs. If you are going for Jeff20B's dldfis, then you will need a 3rd coil and J-109 ignitor. To mount the 3 coil setup, ReSpeed sells a very nice holder just for that purpose.

I've already removed the resistors, just need to know what wires go where, making my own harness. I think I'll spring for the 5 buck mazdatrix diagram, I just can't find the details I need..to much of a 'wuss' to guess.

But thanks for the vaccuum pot info, that was understandable and helpful.

Sending more pix...

...(I don't think you'll want to connect both those vac diaphragms together, either)...

Gotcha on those diaphragms. Installed it last night, one ignitor facing radiator, the other towards alternator. I read somewhere that's correct.
I think I'm going to hold out and try to find a proper wiring harness next.
